Pearl Harbor Day

National News

65 Years ago today, December 7th, 1941, Pearl Harbor and the majority of the US Pacific Fleet was ambushed and laid to ruin by the Japanese Navy in a "day that will live in infamy".

2388 (click for list) soldiers, sailors and marines were killed in the attack.

By the end of December 8th, 1941 Congress along with the President had declared war on the Japanese, plunging the US into World War II.

 WAR DECLARED

Today is a day to remember; if you know anyone; your grandparents or great grandparents, who were around during World War II, take some time out to call them up or go sit down with them and ask them about their experiences. Oral traditions like these; first hand accounts, are the only way these types of stories are truly going to survive. Documentaries, books, Hollywood movies...they're all great for telling the story in broadstrokes, but it's the personal touches that really make the difference. Those stories put the war into perspective and help us cope with events happening today.

No one will ever again be able to talk with someone from the Civil War. Those men and women are lost to the ages. While our veterans are still here, take the time to talk to "The Greatest Generation" and I think you'll be impressed with what you find out.
