World War I Veterans

National News

US Army DoughboyIt is with no small sadness, we mark this month with the passing of the Last U.S. Combat Veteran of World War I ("The Great War").

Corporal Howard V. Ramsey was laid to rest to the sounds of a 21-Gun Salute on March 2nd, 2007 in Portland, OR...just two weeks after being recognized as the last living U.S. Combat Veteran of that war.

This follows quite closely on the heels of Kansas' last World War I Vet, Albert F. "Jud" Wagner on January 25th, 2007. "Jud" also held the distiction of being the last U.S. Marine of that era.

2007 is an interesting year for the military so far. Turmoil and struggles under the current administration on the front end; new developments in techonology such as unmanned aerial bombers, unmanned tanks, and "dragonskin" body armor to protect our troops...as well as saying goodbye to a legacy of heroes, especially noted as the Doughboys of World War I. Godspeed, gentlemen.

My grandmother's favorite brother died in "the war to end war." She never got over it. 'Til the day she died she kept his bedroom exactly as he left it when he went to Europe.

I was very young and she was very old when she tutored me to recite this poem by WWI soldier Wilfred Owen. Owen died in action two weeks before November 11, 1918.

The Parable of the Old Man and the Young

So Abram rose, and clave the wood, and went,
And took the fire with him, and a knife.
And as they sojourned both of them together,
Isaac the first-born spake and said, My Father,
Behold the preparations, fire and iron,
But where the lamb for this burnt-offering?
Then Abram bound the youth with belts and strops,
And builded parapets and trenches there,
And stretched forth the knife to slay his son.
When lo! an angel called him out of heaven,
Saying, Lay not thy hand upon the lad,
Neither do anything to him. Behold,
A ram, caught in a thicket by its horns;
Offer the Ram of Pride instead of him.

But the old man would not so, but slew his son,
And half the seed of Europe, one by one.
