Did you hear that Valerie Plame is appearing before a House committee this morning? It's Hank's dream come true. Wonder if he will be thinking it's a nightmare pretty soon?
This is long, but a bit of what I found at Dan Froomkin's White House Watch:
On the subject of avoiding responsibility and accountability Bush&Co. avoid using their official White House e-mail accounts -- the ones that get automatically archived.
This would appear to be the flipside of the issue that arose during the Clinton administration, when Vice President Al Gore improperly made fund-raising calls from his White House office. Here, rather than having party business being conducted using official resources, you have official business being conducted using party resources.
Also in Tuesday's document dump was a Jan. 8, 2007 e-mail from Steve Bell, the chief of staff to Sen. Pete Domenici, about the senator's preferred replacement for fired U.S. attorney David Iglesias. Bell sent that e-mail to three people -- including one "kr@georgewbush.com".
I wonder who that was.
And consider this: copies of e-mails between now-convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff and Susan Ralston, then an assistant to Karl Rove, showed her using a variety of e-mail addresses at georgewbush.com, rnchq.com and aol.com.
Will this be the nail in Gonzales's coffin?
Murray Waas writes today for the National Journal: "Shortly before Attorney General Alberto Gonzales advised President Bush last year on whether to shut down a Justice Department inquiry regarding the administration's warrantless domestic eavesdropping program, Gonzales learned that his own conduct would likely be a focus of the investigation, according to government records and interviews. . . .
"Bush personally intervened to sideline the Justice Department probe in April 2006 by taking the unusual step of denying investigators the security clearances necessary for their work. . . .
"Sources familiar with the halted inquiry said that if the probe had been allowed to continue, it would have examined Gonzales's role in authorizing the eavesdropping program while he was White House counsel, as well as his subsequent oversight of the program as attorney general."
Waas writes that it isn't clear if Bush knew Gonzales was a potential target of the probe when he intervened. But either way, this is ugly.
If Gonzales told the president he wanted the probe quashed because he himself was in the crosshairs, then you've potentially got Bush personally involved in a cover-up to help his friend. If Gonzales didn't tell Bush that he was a potential target, then the attorney general may have abused his office and misled the president.

Running through multiple Attorney Generals shouldn't surprise us. When everything "they of Bush&Co." do seems to be in violation of the law it must be difficult to be the top lawmaker, huh? Of course, someone who is competent instead of just being loyal might help.

My comment above should have said "top law enforcer," instead of law maker. But it all boils down to:
He don't need no one to tell him what's legal! He's THE Pres! Doesn't that mean he is the Chief MF in charge of everything everywhere?

There's a lot of speculation about when Gonzalez's head is gonna roll, when, and under what circumstances. Somebody on some other blog said it best, I think: that given the choice between hanging on to his brain (Rove) or his tool (Gonzalez), Bush will go with the brain. Seems right to me.
However, if the Senate Judiciary Committee DOES subpeona Rove, and can get him on the short end of the stick, I can envision Bush throwing even Rove under the bus in order to save himself. That much vaunted Bush family loyalty, you know.
A further point: this "Administration," literally, operates under the legal "theory" that "if the President does it, it can't be wrong."
It's Nixon all over again, but worse: Nixon was at least a nominally rational agent. Jesus didn't talk directly to him.

Playing Devil's Advocate for just a bit on the firing of the U.S. Attorneys:
If, indeed, the idea of replacing all US Attorneys was the brainchild of Harriet Meirs after the election, the email inquiry from Rove concerning what was going on on that matter would be a normal "follow up" to check on the progress. After all, he (if anyone) would need to be in the loop for the political ramifications which might flow therefrom.
What confuses me about this whole thing: when the story broke, there should have been a statement made to the effect that all US Attorneys serve at the pleasure of the president; the president, through his AG, determined the individuals terminated should have been; this was done. End of controversy, IMO. What did happen was a total mishandling of the PR on the deal, with inconsistent and incomplete (to be charitable) statements made. Coupling this with the plethora of information now coming forth, it has turned into the latest scandal and another embarrassment to the administration.

Well VT, that is what the pundits are calling the "drip drip drip" disaster of how to respond to a crisis. They are no more competent doing this than the Katrina aid, Walter Reed, etc. But this time, THEY are suffering for it, not some group of powerless citizens.
Gonzo is a weasel of the highest order. His value is in carrying bushco's water. When his buckets spring a leak, they will toss him on the "used" pile and move on.
The pundits also say that the preznit will hang on to gonzo as long as possible and try to run out the clock. (Seems to be their fall back strategy on EVERYTHING now)
It is noted that he will have a hell of a time getting one of his butt boys confirmed as AG, and he may end up with someone who actually BELIEVES the DOJ is in the business of law enforcement, not selective prosecution.
I was also wondering yesterday, about how the repukes are always trying to say corruption and scandal are bipartisan. The repukes have STILL been fingered more often for indictments and other possible remedies for wrong doing.
So, if dems are being targeted, and the vast majority of scandals are STILL repuke, what does THAT tell you about how bipartisan the scandals are? Not so much, it seems to me.
Not that the dems are totally clean. Being out of power does seem to keep the more greedy members in check. Now that the dems are back in power, look for the weaker ones to give in to the siren call of wealth in addition to power.

VT,
While I, obviously, am more inclined to smell nefariousness whenever Rove is afoot, I agree they've completely bungled the "coverup" portion of this latest scandal.
When you say 'after the election,' it isn't clear which election you mean: 2006 or 2004. I'm assuming you mean the former?
As the evidence trail is beginning to show, I think this actually goes back quite a bit further. As is shown in this memo obtained by ABC news, Rove was setting this plan in motion as of January 6, 2005.
http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/docs/sampsonrove-...
There's a longer trail that one could spin out as well: digby has done a good job with this, as has Sidney Blumenthal at Salon.
Here's the latest: Rep. Dana Rohrbacher (R-CA) has called for Gonzalez's head!
"Even for Republicans this is a warning sign … saying there needs to be a change," said Rohrbacher. "Maybe the president should have an attorney general who is less a personal friend and more professional in his approach."
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/03/15/politics...
Stick a fork in Gonzalez--he's done, big time. Jesus. When even DANA ROHRBACHER throws you under the bus, it's time to tender your resignation so you can "spend more time with your family."

While I was driving yesterday, I also was musing about what the hell the dems seem to be afraid of.
I wondered this morning about why the repukes are suddenly on the sharp end of the media stick. Then it dawned on me.
The repukes have NO CLUE how to operate when the media doesnt work FOR THEM. Look how they botched even the media angles of Katrina and that started to unravel their air of invincibility and competence. All these other scandals are being managed in the same horrific way. I realized that they used to intimidate because they had the media fawning over them and reporting every fart as the gospel according to bushco. That is also how they won elections. By manipulating and virtually controlling the media.
And also the voting machines, of course :)
After Katrina, the media worm turned, and the repukes have been rudderless and sliding since then. They cant operate in a hostile media environment.
I think that is what the dems have been cowed by too. They lost power in congress in 94, partly because THEY controlled the spin for so many years, and then were shocked, SHOCKED I say, when the worm turned. They were out spun and never got ahead of the media curve until BUSHCO blew it so badly the media turned to alternatives.
People say the fourth estate hasnt been doing their job. I say they have been doing half their job. They did just fine getting "the word" out. But they forgot that their job also includes vetting that "word" before they report it.
And now? I think the media has been getting as much of a red ass as bushco. The public turns to "the internets" he to get raw info and they put their own spin on it.
This isnt a "blame the media" meme. It is just and honest assessment on my part that the dems better learn to not be afraid of the media right now. Stop wetting the bed and get on with it. Have some self confidence and self esteeem, dammit. Investigate, end the war, end corruption, take action. Dont sit there like a cornered calf and wonder which way the media will go next.
I think if you build a competent government, they will come. Just like the cornfield in Iowa. :)

CF, I was actually referring to the 2004 election, as that is when (allegedly) Ms Meirs floated her plan, which was a natural time to consider US Attorney replacement.
Yes, when Dana Rohrbacher is throwing one under the bus, it is time for one to leave. However, as pointed out above, who the devil can GWB nominate that passes the "Rove" test and will be confirmable? That's why I think this one lasts a while longer.

Sorry CF, I guess our posts crossed, but I think we are all saying the same thing. I hadnt heard about dana yet, but I agree. However, I havent looked at when he is up for re-election. I heard someone say this morning that the ones calling for gonzo's head are also the ones up for election in 08. I think the RNC will let them go off the reservation for a little bit so they can tell the folks back home they worked to fight corruption. heheheheheh
So, if Dana is NOT up for election in 08, then his call for gonzo's head is even more potent. I just wonder if the cries from their side of the aisle will have to reach "harriet miers" proportions again to get his attention.
I cant believe that dumb biotch is at the bottom of yet another scandal. I think she is their mikey. You know, "hey, let's let mikey eat it. He'll eat anything". I cant remember who said it yesterday, but she already did that hatchet work for the preznit in Austin when she buried a scandal concerning the texas lottery.
I thought she resigned? Is she leaving any time soon? Did I just imagine it? I know she has no immediate family to "spend time" with, so maybe she will do pro bono work? Yeah. When donkies fly...

I posted this on the wrong thread before I had coffee. I keep forgetting we have a new thread every day. duh.
Good morning all. I wish I could stay awake long enough to play with the big kids on the night crew.
Dubya, I like it here. I intend to stay. I see we hit just about as many posts here as they did on their open thread. They are posting more today, and I expect that. I've noticed this before, that after a big dust up, the posts drop off and then climb back up.
The email exchanges were interesting last night. Might I suggest we bring a lot of that over here to pump up the posts and keep the conversation going? I dont know, maybe there are concerns about giving away too much information after how we all got hammered over on the other blog.
But private email conversations, which we know are not so private, cant be shared by all, and most of what was exchanged in email was just chatter.
I think the best way to thank our hosts, other than a delivery of fried chicken and potato salad, is to make their blog hum and drive traffic to it. I dont care if they sell ads. They need to make some money so they can keep doing this.
SO, lib bloggers, keep your fingers busy today! :) Uh, well, you know what I mean....

longhorn, allow me to pontificate a bit. :-)
I believe the issue with the internet is truly generational. The 'net is something which cannot be controlled in any traditional way, i.e., advertising, boycotts, other ways. There are many untested legal issues concerning net content and liability therefor. Yes, the case law is slowly developing; however, the traditional analysis doesn't fit in many cases.
Most of the "top dogs" don't understand what the internet has unleashed; raw fact and opinion, not generally vetted, laying out there for anyone with net access to read for him/herself, and evaluate based on whatever criteria the reader desires to apply. Many of them are my age or a bit older; many have not taken the time to become familiar with the use of computers, much less the internet. That's why they have staffers, right?
I compare this to what appears to be happening in my profession; the use of on-line resources for legal research vs. the use of the traditonal printed materials. The thought that a computer-savvy attorney may prepare many of his/her documents without the need for a large clerical staff. The humbling realization that a "one man band" with computer skills can do the same research as the "boy's farm" large firms assigning several associates to peruse the materials. The further fact that the pleadings, briefs, etc. produced on a computer with a good printer are just as professional in appearance as those produced "in the old days" by skilled typists using IBM Executives. I could go on and on, but feeling a bit of mercy, won't.
To conclude (I hear the sighs of relief now): it will take a younger generation, more savvy about electronic communication, to fully exploit the potential which now exists. A final example: the error made by hiring known bloggers by the Edwards campaign as opposed to using a campaign worker/volunteer to run its blog and to build relationships with established bloggers. Had the latter course been chosen, that campaign would be further "down the road" at this point, with a lot more favorable (IMO) rep in the blogosphere.

Good morning y'all!!! A couple thoughts......
Over on WE Blog, Khan is claiming that Hard Truth is one of us under a diff nic, but IT'S OKAY WITH HIM IF HE IS NIC-SWITCHING. Talk about a confession. They are still in full congrats mode, but some are wondering when we will surrender and come back. Funny stuff.
I like this Blog and intend to stay. We need to make that collective decision so that our hosts can plan for the volume. We also need to work with Dave and Aaron - make suggestions - offer to help on various things.
Okay, my suggestion - allow bloggerites to write and submit topics for threads a la DU.
Okay, I will also volunteer to help as needed. I am not good for much (ask Fleet and Nut) but I do have some time to offer.
Last, I want to thank our hosts once again for their patience with a bunch of looney lefties that have invaded their space.
I won't be around too much today. I have a project to work on for my daughter and son-in-law. My granddaughters room has a smell of mildew and the paint is bubbling below one of the windows. You know what is coming next.....
Funny, my granddaughter is not quite seven - she still thinks that Grandpa can fix anything!

VT, you can pontificate all you like :) I always find your posts informative and not boring at all. I agree with all you posted. It makes "the media" harder to control, so you just have to do your best and operate with integrity and build relationships with them. Hard for politicos who are used to just governing by edict.
I also think "the media" hasnt gotten the word that they are no longer soley in charge of how the word gets to regular people. They only pay attention to the blogosphere when the cries and evidence uncovered are too loud to ignore. I notice all the msm folks have their own blogs, so they are trying, but they dont seem to get that the same ol' bullshit in internet form is still... the same ol' bullshit.
I visit a lot of Kansas papers, and ALL their blogs and discussion boards suck with VERY few comments. My friend Peg's blog gets TONS of hits, way more than the WE blog, but hardly ANYONE ever comments.
The WE blog was special because so many people commented. I think THAT is what readers enjoyed. That's why I keep harping that we need to relax and post more here to get the conversation going, and keep it going.
I would volunteer to post threads too if the WV guys are too busy. But I am mindful that this is THEIR blog and we are guests. So it's just an offer, not a request.
Clark, my Dad has been dead 21 years, but I STILL think he could come back from the grave and fix anything. Some days, I sure wish he would :)

I caved - I posted one comment on yesterday's open thread on the blog that shall not be named. But it was congrats on Nathan coming back. And yes I plan to be at his welcome home party (as I'm sure many of us plan).

Well, I see our junior senator agrees with General Pace; is sending a letter to the President in support, seeking other Senators' signatures (per article on cnn.com). While this was predictable in light of the senator's personal beliefs, I don't think this is going to help him in obtaining the GOP nomination for President; and, in the very unlikely event he could secure it, surely won't gain him any great support in the general election.
While I, like Ben, have noticed his consistent adherence to his principles after being elected to public office (unlike some others) and I feel a certain respect for this, there is no way that I could vote for him for President, except if Ghengis Kahn rises from the grave perhaps.

Good morning, WSC and all...
This question came up the other day. Is the AG AG scandel only about the bungled "cover-up", or is firing those folks without cause something the President can do? On NPR the other day (and I recognize that their "balanced opinions" are imposed with a rifle) a Republican talking head was saying that it was routine for the head of the US Attorney's offices to submit their resignation when an opposing party took the White House; thereby suggesting replacing US A's is, by precident, a partisan process. Is that true, or not?

I'm not picking on you dear Julie, but we need to stick together guys. It has only been THREE days. If anyone wants to congratulate hank, which I think is a fine thing, we could do it by email, no?
Otherwise, they are winning, and one by one the libs will trickle back. And take a great ribbing by the righties for their failed efforts. If nothing else, it proves we are addicted and lurking, and all they have to do, with the support of the WE editors, is wait us out. And when you go back, they will RULE you forever.
I guess if some of you dont mind, that is your business. No one is obligated to support the boycott.
But they are right. I do see more of us trickling back. I thought we AGREED to stay away until the first of April.
Do we want to call this off? I'm still not going back, but if we cant stick together, we might as well admit defeat and call it off.
And tell them they were right. They can live without us but we cant live without them?

dd, the statement made is true. The general procedure is for all sitting political appointees, including U.S. Attorneys, to submit a letter of resignation after each Presidential election. The President then determines whether to accept the same, and the timing thereof.
To the ultimate question: yes, replacing U.S. Attorneys, together with doggone near all other governmental "employees" who serve at "the pleasure of the President" is always a partisan process. Generally, as has been pointed out in the recently released emails, in the case of U.S. Attorneys, consultation is had with the Senators representing the state in which the U.S. Attorney's district is located on a replacement, to 1) have a sponsor during confirmation hearings, and 2) make the confirmation process a bit smoother.

There is no need (for me) to make any decision about going back at this time. I do what I say and I said I would not post "over there" for the balance of this month. I spend less time each day even reading there and scroll over much that is there. After all, the people I find interesting (for the most part) aren't there any longer. And, longhorn is right! It's only been three days. When we get to the end of the month then I will make another decision.

I was guilty, too and commented after Hank's post about Nathan coming back. I am not going to Nathan's welcome home party. I don't like him or his dad, so it would be hypocritical of me to go. Further, feeling indebted to Hank for anything, is an idea I find repellent.
In my comment, I expressed my genuine relief that Nathan was coming home. Not even he deserves to die for Bushco's great misadventure.
I don't plan to go back to WE Blog regardless of the outcome of the boycott. And, I am daily finding it difficult to justify reading there, even. Some of those folks are just profoundly stupid.

VT,
OK, but that's only half the story, and having dug into the matter pretty deeply over the last couple of week, it isn't entirely.
More importantly, that way of framing the question misses the real issue, which is the nonpartisan rule of law. "Partisan selection" does NOT mean that those who are selected as U.S. Attorneys are therefore expected to do the bidding of their political patrons. It never has meant this, and when it has, it has been seen as an abberation.
More to the point, in the case of the present firings, an unwillingness or refusal to bring prosecutions on the basis of their political benefit to one's appointer is NOT a relevant reason for replacing U.S. Attorneys. Period. The fact that the U.S. Attorney for Washington State wouldn't pursue allegations of voter fraud against Democrats, after two recounts of the state's gubernatorial election declared Democrat Christine Gregoire the winner, even though this was what the White House wanted, isn't a valid reason for letting go a U.S. Attorney. Neither, for that matter, is the similar set of reasons involved in David Iglesias' dismissal.
The real issue isn't what the President did. No one disputes that it's his perogative to dismiss his appointees. The real issue here is WHY the President and the Administration pursued this policy, and what led them to fire certain Attorneys rather than others.
If it can be shown that their goal was to install prosecutors who wereamenable to using their offices to pursue politically-motivated prosecutions against Democrats while not going after Republican wrongdoing, then the Bush Administration has politicized the activities of the Justice Department and the Federal system of prosecution in an unprecedented fashion.
Richard Nixon was going to be impeached for much less than this. The ghost of Nixon, in the person of Karl Rove, has spent the last seven years eroding ever reservoir of neutral authority in the United States government.
Patrick Leahey needs to subpeona Karl Rove and to get to the bottom of this. Because what's at stake here, in the politicization of career Federal Prosecutors, is the rule of law, itself.

CF, agreed that the real issue isn't whether the President has the power; that isn't even debatable. As you have identified, the issue is unduly politicization of the U.S. Attorneys' offices.
And, in my case, the use of the "new" power to appoint interim U.S. Attorneys without being subject to Senate confirmation further solidifies my opinion that the "firings" were, with the exception of the one office where there appear to have been managerial problems (San Francisco, IIRC) for political reasons.
I've been interested in the silence of GMC on "the other place" concerning this issue. He has, previously, posted a strong argument for prosecutorial discretion, which, from my observation of the still-unfolding story, is one of the things these firings and replacements were designed to stifle.
Final comment for this posting: I am also concerned what the retained U.S. Attorneys did/didn't do to avoid this fate. I'll let you mull on that one for a bit.

I think it is sweet that some of you can put aside your feelings and wish Nathan well. I can not. But please, if you feel the need to do so, do it with email and not on blog brand x.
Like Linda, I will re-evaluate on April 1. But CF, I agree we need a plan and strategy. Is someone(s) working on that? I promise, if I go back, not to be quite so ruthless. But I see they hammered Jed just for being funny and of course, just for disagreeing with them.
I fear it will be the same way. Part of what we post as snark and HUMOR for god's sake is indeed just for entertainment. So if we go back under there rule, NO LAUGHING will be allowed? Jesus wept.
Anyway, here is a GREAT RANT from DU. It is meant to be used against that "one republican" we always encounter in our lives. Truely a great rant.

VT, I agree. I heard a pundit say last night, I think it was Craig Crawford, that we should be asking what the ones who STAYED either did or didnt do to endear them to their political masters. Some, I suppose, like the USA in ks, dont matter to anyone. Some were good lapdogs, and some are politically well connected no matter what they do or dont do.
I also agree that inserting the little sneaky provision in the PA about replacing them WITHOUT senate oversight, is the tell about how long this was planned. The only question now is WHEN will the senate members get some balls? Not just our guys, but the repukes as well.
If they cant see the handwriting on the wall with this (even David freakin' GERGEN agrees with us) they must have been blinded by a little moonshine in the koolaide.
OTH... could we be getting a better setup for 08? Scandals and supoenas and indictments, oh my? It is the dems to lose, but given their uncanny ability the last 12 years to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, that is no small risk.
As CF said, here's too and LONG spring of supoenas.

Regarding the last point, we have our answer. The numbers tell the story. Here's a stat from a Paul Krugman column, that's been 'offshored' at another site:
"The bigger scandal, however, almost surely involves prosecutors still in office. The Gonzales Eight were fired because they wouldn’t go along with the Bush administration’s politicization of justice. But statistical evidence suggests that many other prosecutors decided to protect their jobs or further their careers by doing what the administration wanted them to do: harass Democrats while turning a blind eye to Republican malfeasance.
Donald Shields and John Cragan, two professors of communication, have compiled a database of investigations and/or indictments of candidates and elected officials by U.S. attorneys since the Bush administration came to power. Of the 375 cases they identified, 10 involved independents, 67 involved Republicans, and 298 involved Democrats. The main source of this partisan tilt was a huge disparity in investigations of local politicians, in which Democrats were seven times as likely as Republicans to face Justice Department scrutiny."
http://welcome-to-pottersville.blogspot.com/2007/0...
As I say, we have our answer. And the longer GMC70 refuses to call out the Administration's tampering with Federal prosecutions for what it is, the more right CF is to call GMC70 a willing accomplice to Bush Administration lies.
Still think this is a "conspiracy theory," GMC70? And if there are such things as legitimate "conspiracies" among the members of the Administration, then it's possible there are others, isn't it?

longhorn, I think we may all agree that single-party control of the Executive and Legislative branches of government results in many things, most of which aren't necessarily good.
As to the provision snuck into the Patriot Act reauthorization act, it appears that there is some bi-partisan support for repeal; even the White House recognizes that this experiment went bad, and, from news reports, has sent a signal repeal thereof will not be opposed. So, on this point, "Git 'er done".

Agreed VT. I think it was also Crawford who said last night that gonzo confused a couple of things. It is the preznit's right to appoint USA's on a partisan basis. But the check and balance of congressional oversight kept the worst of the partisan moves from fullfillment.
Craig things that gonzo confused that with the idea that after they are appointed on a partisan basis, they can CONTINUE to be partisan after their appointment. That is where he made the mistake.
Although, I tend to believe gonzo when he says he was out of the loop. He isnt even a great legal mind. He's just the "legal houseboy" for bushco.

I'm sure that GMC recognizes the conflict, and thus his silence. Most prosecutors of my acquaintance are competent lawyers, doing a hard job; a clear majority of them are, like most of us, a bit egotistical; and, would chafe under the restrictions apparently imposed by the current administration on their independence. Now, in GMC's case, there's a whole lot of difference between being an assistant County Attorney and a U.S. Attorney; from my conversations with him at the meetup, he doesn't strike me as being of sufficient ego to seek such an appointment; or, his ego is such, he doesn't see himself as being amenable to the political "stuff" necessary to apply for such a job.
longhorn, I suspect the current U.S. Attorney in Kansas has little attention paid to him by his superiors. He does have, by and large, a very competent staff of assistants, who continue to do their job well, from my observations. Mr. Melgren isn't, however, one who will "rock the boat".

And the ability of libs to question their own assumptions is what I like best about lib posters. I believe the unexamined life is not worth living. But in my usual "everything to excess and NOTHING in moderation", I spend HUGELY inappropriate amounts of time gazing at my own navel.
When I can see it of course :)

Linda, if this makes you feel any better: my wife, who was the last (or next to last) president of the now long defunct Jay Janes pep club at KU gets so worked up by KU games, she doesn't watch them live, but videotapes them to watch after she knows the result. I, on the other hand, watch them live, muting the sound to hear the call by BobnChris (used to be BobnMax). I especially enjoy Pipe's analysis. As a former player, he is quite quick to praise good play, and to point out deficiencies where the same exist.

Longhorn, Ma'am.
Strategy-wise, it's tough to argue with humorless hypocrites bent on victory at any cost.
Some options for us are:
-Adopt their tactics (nic-switching, name-stealing) any time they do, and when speaking in their voice, attribute to them the grossest and most stereotypical excesses associated with their views (i.e. homoeroticism masquerading as hypermasculinity)
-Never address them directly. Talk about them only in the third person, and only talk directly to each other. That way, we're commenting on them, about them, in front of them, and when they say something about us, we get to turn it into something THEY have said about us, which is still about them.
-Give their stock responses numbers, but don't tell them what these mean. When they try to use one, say that "Poster X just used a #5!"
-My "Joe Williams is an idiot" bell was a big hit on the blog. Anything that invokes a picture, sound, feeling or smell in conjunction with a particular blogger counts as a kind of branding.
-Find ways to argue using the Wingnut argument form of "If I say Y is true, it's true unless you can prove it isn't," by which they shift the burden of proof from the arguer to the skeptic.
-Use the transactional analysis model of parent, child, adult, to characterize their posts (ie, when someone rants, it's their child; when someone scolds and judges, it's their schoolmarmish parent; when someone has good boundaries, they're behaving as an adult)
These are just a few ideas. What other ideas do folks have?
Also, VT, as you are Switzerland in all of this, I'd ask for your discreet silence regarding this post.

Tracy, I also agree that we have had some hellish nic switchers on our side of the blog as well.
Many of us had thoughts and opinions about that, but kept quiet out of loyalty, or because the lib nic switchers didnt attack us. Some of us have been comparing notes and bits of information gleaned, and I think we know some of them. We just aren't calling them out. But dont think every lefty nic switcher doesnt leave a "tell" or two behind. NONE of us is that clever to cover all our tracks.
My dad had a name for nic switchers who do it 'cause they dont want to be known for their opinions or past posts. I think "chickenshit" is the technical term he would use.
There are times when it is harmless, like when Walker was brer somebody. THAT was just plain funny. But I realize that I lose almost all respect when I find a nic switcher who is dodging the consequeses of controversy or past posts.
I hope if some of us go back, the left will be distinguished by only minimal and harmless nic switching.

Longhorn,
I think it is interesting that given we're not over there, that certain folk are taking it upon themselves to define what is acceptable discourse and from whom that can derive. Who TF do they think they are?

Agreed. But I wanted to put all the options out there. Nic-switching is the, so to speak, mother of all nuclear options, because it would create complete anarchy--and not the good, fun kind, either.
(Philosophy comparison follows: I apologize.)
It's like when Kant uses the example of lying to test the Categorical Imperative. The CI states, "act only according to the maxim you could will as a universal law of nature." If everyone were to lie, truth-telling would be nullified--in which case, no one would be able to tell a lie. Likewise, if EVERYONE nic-switched or trolled, then no one could. These things only "work" because the underlying presumption has to be that people don't do these things.
I knew I'd get some flak from you, Longhorn, for putting this out there. But it IS a tactic, albeit an ultimately self-defeating one, and I wanted everything on the table. Self-definition and all; we know who we are in part by knowing who we aren't.
Just to be clear, I've never, EVER posted under another handle. If I were to change names, for whatever reason, I'd notify everyone and continue to honor my former posts.
As for the B'rer Rabbit episode, that was the funniest goddamn thing I ever saw on a WeBlog. Genius. Lots of things to learn from how JM Walker styled himself, and how he adopted the persona.

CF, those are GREAT strategies. The joe williams bell was one of my faves, and I think it pushed him to adopt different nics.
I also like the speaking about them in front of them as though they were not there, and only addressing each other when that happens.
And I LOVE the numbering of their stock responses. It is so appropriate.
The nic switching? I think we can use it in a "judo" manner against them, I just wont be doing it.
I do think there is some humor in ALL of us using a certain nic to puncture their pomposity. I have suspected that more than one poster is useing "Republican" right now. What if we all used one when we go into that "response to attack" mode. I just cant think of a funny one right now.
All good points guys. I like having a strategy. And the "secret code" of the numbering will DRIVE THEM CRAZY! hehehehehehehe!

VT "or after a SCOTUS showdown it loses" wouldnt that take a lot of time? More "run the clock out"? Notice these butt wipes dont give a rat's ass about any future races for ANY other repukes. They just want to get away with their own hides and let the devil take the hindmost other repukes.
Sort of a "what me worry?" attitude when they know they will all be headed for Paraguay in 09 :)
These PIG F'ers are going to use the "run the clock out" strategy from here on out. It will be a lovely companion to "deny 'till ya die" or "I have a faulty memory". Seems to me like the length and strength of their collective political payback memory works just fine.
Our players need to work on special teams and forced turnovers to use a football analogy. Otherwise? The rovester is just gonna spike the ball any chance he gets.
And, unlike in football, the damn clock just keeps running and doesnt stop when he spikes the ball...

So I fooled them :) I got an undergrad degree in finance, but what I really studied would today more appropriately be called "the sociology of business". That discipline didnt exist back then.
And I knew ma and pa would have a FIT if I got a degree in sociology or philosophy. And grad school? Forget about it! That would be the despised "lazy, life long college student". Yes, hearing your biography, one gets the sense that you are, indeed, sui generis. Where does such a she as you come from? Not from where she's from, that's for sure.
That was a very interesting conversation we had back in the summer over the 'sociology of business,' by the way. I'm always interested in seeing such methological tools applied to entities that don't usually come in for such questioning. Usually, folks who are in it don't have the requisite distance to be able to assess the larger dynamics that are taking place.
As for this Administration, I'm on your side: they utterly and totally have no time for the rule of law. This is, as I have often said, a completely fascist regime. They reduce all questions of truth to questions of power.
And for that reason, the link DD provided is really the hinge of the whole thing: it's going to fascinating to see the WH refuse a Congressional subpeona, and to see what Constitutional machinery can be used to bring the Administration to heel. I actually believe that such apparatuses have the power to stop these bastards in their tracks. They tried to rodent bugger the Fall elections and couldn't, and now there is a counterpower in place that, if used resourcefully, can start to corrall them.

VT, I admire your ability to escape the cynical dungeon. I have not yet found the escape passage. I think bush v gore or whatever it was called, pretty much destoyed the credibility of SCOTUS as anything but another hammer to be used by the repukes. Sorry, I'm not being harsh with you, just honest.
All but two of those b v g justices are sitting, and having bushco and the ballless congress appoint them did NOTHING to change my mind that SCOTUS has much less to do with the law than it does with conservative reich wing politics.
I meant to address this point earlier under the USA conversation. The repukes, under reagan and bush one, had 12 F'n years to appoint justices. With the repuke controlled congress, they had another 12 years to screw with appointments, and now under "bushco, the nightmare returns", they will have had 8 DAMN years to appoint more sitting justices.
I think that dems, by losing their asses so often, have given the repukes almost 20 years to shape SCOTUS. And I see that they have done it well by their lights. That is why it is so important that dems interrupt their winning streaks and dont give them so much unbroken time to line up both current and future appointments.
I remember when Bill Clinton had to reach back to Warren Christopher 'cause no other dems had any relevant experience after 12 years of repuke rule.
The dangerous thing about these uninterrupted strings of USA and judge appointments is that they are also being successful in, as one pundit put it, Karl Rove's plan to salt and lard the team bench with folks who have experience so they can keep control in the future in crucial appointments.
For me, with all due respect to you and your profession VT, the courts do not deserve ANY respect. I do respect the rule of law, but right now? The rule of law is just a JOKE in these ununited states.

"Yes, hearing your biography, one gets the sense that you are, indeed, sui generis. Where does such a she as you come from? Not from where she's from, that's for sure."
My folks, when they were at WITS end with me, used to fall back on the comfort that there was nothing wrong with them. My problem was that I was adopted as an infant, and therefor, I came with my own faulty genes, not their own! That sounds way more harsh than it was, but it was the only explanation they could handle concerning the "sui generis" issue.
They sure spent a lot of wasted effort trying to hammer me into something they wanted, not what I was. And, just as a bonus difficulty factor :) NO ONE on either side of my very large extended families has ever been gay, either in or out of the closet.
I'm the first person on either side to graduate from college. I have 34 older Bender cousins and 16 older Stenzel cousins, so ya know, it isnt like they didnt have others who could have gone to college. Hee hee hee, they just thought my folks were spoiling me by sending me on to school. I was already a little "uppity" for the rest of my family.
Ok, therapy session done :) Where do I drop 5 cents for the doc who was in?

The Bloody Benders were a family of serial killers who owned a small general store and inn in Labette County, Kansas from 1872 to 1873. The family consisted of John Bender, his wife, son, and daughter Kate. Kate was very attractive and outgoing, and thus became a large draw for the Benders' establishment. She proclaimed herself to be a healer and psychic who could cure sickness and contact the dead. Kate is believed to be the driving force behind the Bender family killings.
The Bender Killing Method
The Bender family home had a large room that was divided by a curtain. If a guest appeared to be wealthy, they would give him a seat of honor, with his back to the curtain. Kate would distract the guest, while John Bender or his son would come from behind the curtain and strike the guest on the skull with a hammer. The victim's throat was then cut to ensure his death. The body was moved behind the curtain and thrown through a trap door that led down into a cellar. Once in the cellar, the body would be stripped and later buried somewhere on the property, often in the orchard.

hee hee hee hee Tracy! No, we are the tame farming Benders from Russell, via Germany and Russia! Actually, my Mom said one time they thought they were related, but, funny thing, we didnt talk about it much:)
Besides, as I pointed out, I dont have any Bender BLOOD!!! heheheh. My mom was an Indian from oklahoma, my father is unknown (WTF???) and I was born in Topeka. I do know my birth name and my birth mom's name and age, but little else.
I could find out more, but for a variety of boring reasons, I chose not to do so.
My folks are my real folks. Despite my yuppy introspective whining here, I had a story book child hood and the love and support of my parents all my life. They did the best they could with a veeery difficult child.
Think about it. HEHEHEHEEHEHEHEHEHHHEEHEHEHEHEHEHEH!!!!

I am going to side with Vaughn on this one, even though he did not explicitly say what I'm going to. I think the US Supreme Court has as part of their mandate the long term interests of the law and country. I think this will allow them to help impose the law on the Bush administration. If this proves to be wrong, it may be time to get your Mauser out and prepare to climb over the wall.

"If this proves to be wrong, it may be time to get your Mauser out and prepare to climb over the wall"
You know, in my 30+ years of adulthood, we have all joked about that many times. But this time? It feels different. Like it might really happen.
Seriously? I am stockpiling food like crazy and I'm going to be canning to beat hell this summer. There is a reason why I am raising chickens for the first time. It isnt like I need another job :) I feel like our food supply in this country is really in jeopardy for a variety of reasons.
It remains to be seen if I could actually kill someone with one of my many guns. Somehow I think I am soft and neutered in my 50's and dont think I could do it. I dont even hunt anymore, and one of my pals has agreed to kill and clean the chickens. I can do it, but I just dont have the heart to kill anymore.
People say under the right circumstances, we are all capable of killing. I hope they're right. Besides, with a sharp tongue like mine, I could either slice them up with it's razor edge, or make them fall down laughing! I hope it is laughing 'cause I dont want to get close enough to really use my tongue!

Vaughn is a good object. I don't think he could be upset too much with negativity.
I think that even Roberts and Alito can see past 2009 - is the point I was making. Not all republicans are like Bush - if that were true, I can't even imagine the anarchy we'd have.
I am old enough to remember the group of republicans (including Goldwater) going to the White House to have a "Come to Jesus" talk with Nixon. He resigned the next week.
It may not be that pretty and neat with the current resident, but he is losing ground daily with his party and I think that even he can recognize the value of compromise when the costs are high enough.

They are having so much fun over there...
... heheheheh that they have had a whopping 130 posts on today's threads!
They are agreeing with each other that a)bush is competent b) the USA firings were not political c)all libs are foul mouthed group thinkers d)Nathan is the best thing since sliced bread, etc.
Couple of libs posting occassionally, but I think they are one hit wonders. I do wish they'd stop. And I wish writerdog and JR would knock it off that we want "censorship" or "over the top posts" pulled. We want TROLL prevention, and that's all, right?
And at the risk of thinking about them too much, I think paul rossell is germie!
No shit. Germie has been "sounding" less grandmotherly and more savy lately. Whatever. But this morning, germie posted a link from, wait for it, FREEPERVILLE!!! Now, most grandmothers dont read free republic, and paulie has posted many links from them and townhall, etc.
And in a new post, germie says something about ECON 101. Dont know if that is a red herring, but I think if we are beeeeewwy beeeewy quiet, germie may out herself as paulie. I think he/she wants them to know. And why has no one asked her when her "10 day" hehehe vacation starts? I thought it was to start yesterday, then today, and now? Whatever. I just think it's funny.
Make 'em comfy and let them spread out a bit, and who knows WHAT we will find out!

Hey there, folks. Just rearranging the deck chairs on the Ti--well, actually, the thousand+ books in my office.
Digby has an excellent post today on Victoria Toensing's appearance before Henry Waxman's committee.
Takeaway version:
Chris Van Hollen: beyond the legalisms about what counts as 'undercover' versus 'covert,' don't Administration official have an obligation not to reveal the identities of CIA operatives in a cavalier fashion that might damage efforts at nuclear non-proliteration?
Victoria Toensing: well, um, could be, but everybody in government knew that
digbysblog.blogspot.com
What a despicable specimen. And, Digby reports, Henry Waxman called out her testimony as inaccurate, and said he'd leave the record open so her statements can be corrected.
Right on. They might have the Presidency, the Supreme Court, and the Senate. But we have the damn House, and the knowledge of how to run hearings.
Between this and the firings scandal, I'd say Bush is hittin' the bottle pretty hard this evening. Word has it that Laura heads for the Mayflower Hotel in DC when George starts binging. Word also has it that he called her a C**T in front of some reporters.
http://www.waynemadsenreport.com/
Credible? Who knows. But it certainly fits the sort of hissy-fit throwing, vindictive, rigid, out of control juvenile we've come to know these last seven years.

Sort of like the list of usual denials I posted yesterday, here's Michael Shaw's version of the generic poses of press conference denial that one now sees with increasing frequency from Repubes:
1.) We're fine, right?
2.) This is how it is.
3. Don't get me mad. And finally,
4.) See ya later.
Did they all go to the same Wingnut charm school or what?

As for the second point, indeed. They're going to have a whole new rodent buggery offensive ready to roll out Monday morning.
But I'd say they're in real trouble; they haven't had to defend themselves against a hostile Congress armed with subpeonas. It's kind of like the team that's won every game by a ridiculous margin, that now finds itself in the playoffs in overtime. They don't have any precedent for this, and it's becoming increasingly difficult for them to keep the lower echelons in line, since these are the folks who know they'll be expected to take a bullet for the big guys, while getting nothing in return.
Another point I hadn't considered: if Gonzales goes, who can Bush appoint? The Austin mafia are all implicated in this; and if he goes to someone credible and indepedent to restore faith in the DOJ, he runs the risk that such a person might appoint...
that's right: a Special Prosecutor. So they're going to try to ride this Gonzales thing out. But once his deputies go before the Judiciary Committee next week, it's only a matter of when, not if Gonzales goes.

In the Wayne Madsen report (the one CF provided), he really takes on the Washington Post as being a mouthpiece for the Bush White House. I have participated on some of their discussion boards at the Post and most of their political reporters are scared to death of the Bush/Rove administration. I have accused them of being wusses who are tricked into thinking they will get some information if they act nice. They claim they don't have such a motive because they get nothing even when they act nice. I still think Rove, et al. excercises some control over them somehow.

Hey, folks just got back from checking out my kid's mildew problem. Fortunately, this is a house that they have not bought yet because it was not good news. All of the windows need to be replaced and the related wallboard as well. Big bucks. If they were Republicans, they could just borrow the money and let a future generation pay for it. But they are not Rep's so they'll force the owner into fixing it before they buy or no deal.
Democrats are so much smarter.
Here's is my two cents worth of the WE v. WV issue - our hosts have treated us damned well and they have made very efforts to work with us on anything that we consider to be an issue.
I do not want this to turn into DU where everyone kisses up to everyone else. I would be happy to have moderates and true conservatives on the board to debate issues. That would be fun and educational for all.
Going back to WE Blog is not an option. First of all, in my not-so humble opinion, it would be a slap in the face of our new hosts. Secondly, we are dreaming if we think it is going to be any different. For Christ's sake, Khan and SOB are drafting rules for us to live by if we come back.
Our approach should be to get the moderates and true conservatives like RM and Dub-Dog to come over, along with the stragglers. Even though I e-mailed them, the stragglers are still out there. We also need J R to come over. We should actively recruit the reasonable folks to join us.
Any thoughts?
BTW - I am looking for a good crock pot recipe for corned beef and cabbage - any ideas? If so, send me an e-mail.

I agree, we can bring more folks in, but I made a mistake today when I said we had been at it a week. It's only been three days. And... we have been posting as much or more than they are over there.
Our hosts are wonderful, and I think if we can bring more folks here to drive up their numbers, that would be a good thing. I just think we need to wait until April 1 to issue invites. Like Linda said, if anyone was looking for us, they could have googled by now.
As for the cbandc, I actually dont recommend the crock pot, but it depends on what you are cooking. I like the whole corned beef brisket, and I roast mine in the oven for a while, depending on the size. Mine comes in a package with some pickling juices and spices, and it recommends to boil or roast with the juices so dont pour them off. I like to add some heat, like red pepper flakes, but then, I lived in Texas :) I also add lots of onion and garlic too.
I'd guess that I roast it about 40 min per pound or so. About two hours before it's done, I put in some new potatoes and roast them too. Then, about an hour before it's done, I add the cabbage wedges or slices. I try to keep it in kinda big pieces.
When it's done, the veggies should be browned a little, the beef browned a little, and the juice poured off and served on the side if it isnt too salty. If it is too salty, you can add some heavy cream for thickening and to tone down the salt.
Let the brisket rest before you slice it. Then serve it with spicy mustard and dill pickles and enjoy!!!

I tried to send Hank an email - but his link went straight to a website about veterans. I tried bonedigging but didn't have a lot of time. But Scoutmothers Honor - that is the one and only post that I shall make over there until April.
Please don't deprive me of fried chicken and tater salad. I promise to be a good girl. I'm sending the boys out your way (Cedar Bluff)this weekend, you can beat MM if ya want. (Scout campout and geology merit badge)

How much (if any) water do I add to the juices in the bag when I start the roasting? Do I cover? If so, at what point do I uncover?
Thanks in advance!

Grrl, you are really crusin'.
I agree with VT, have some mercy.
Come on' now. I fessed up to quitting smoking a few months ago and the battle with the belt is on going.

Hi Linda! I dont add any water to the juices. I'd come close, but not quite, to covering the brisket with liquid, but if the package juices arent enough to do that, I would use beer :) You could use ckn broth too, but the alcohol cooks out of the beer. I guess you could also use a dry white like Reisling (sp?) but I like beer :) Seems somehow more Cherman as we say out here.
I roast it covered all the way, at about 350. But I cover a "granite" roaster with it's own loose fitting lid, not tightly with foil. You dont want it to steam, you want it to roast. If you think it is getting too done or done too quickly, you could "tent" it loosely with foil if you dont have a lid.
And... (best julia child voice) "Dont worry dear, you are always alone in the kitchen". heheheheheheh

Well folks, I just got back from Dillon's!
Corned beef brisket on sale - paid $4.17 for 3 1/2 pounds of brisket. Paid $0.39 per pound for cabbage. Bought carrots, onions and potatoes and the total barely made ten bucks.
Tomorrow is going to be a great day. A couple of Harp's and maybe a Black and Tan.
A little Chieftans on the CD player. Van Morrison and Celtic Heart.
Damn, it's good to be Irish.
.... and yes, I do want to hear about your Bicuits and Gravy, Farm Grrl, but we'll only discuss it in person - with a cup of strong black coffee - and a fork in my hand.....
Yeah, and I am going to take your advice and toss on some apple slices!!!!

Here's a thought - can we get David Gregory as a full time replacement for Chris Matthews on Hardball? He is doing a much better job that Matthews ever did. I have to admit that Chris was doing much better lately, but Gregory is a far better interviewer in my view.
BTW - Why is Gregory interviewing a Pub who had his suit made out of his office drapes? Who is this Rivkin fellow and why does he look so constipated?
And, damn, he needs to invest in a new suit. That one he is wearing would not have passed muster in the Sixties.

longhorn, I'm adopted, too. Out of Wichita. German Russian family on birthmother's side (Out of Garden City or near there.) Or is that Russian Germans? I forget. Definitely Catholic, as my bmother was the next to youngest of 14.
I like the code names and code answers! Reminds me of the of the Republican Chat Room Rules. And all of us posting under 1 name would certainly confuse the hell out of them--as if they aren't already confused. They all sound great, CF! Good work!
My #2 daughter and her hubby took my youngest and I (along with oldest and her hubby) to Kobe tonight. I am STUFFED with good food, and all the food talk here is making me a tad nauseous. I'll have to wait until this meal settles to pay closer attention. There's steak left for me in the fridge from earlier...
I intend to stay off brand X until the Day of Fools. I'm crazy enough to try to maintain both here and there.
I emailed Hank about Nathan late last night, but never did hear anything back. I used the email addy he used after I told him I was disappointed in his bigotted statement one time. Perhaps he didn't get this new one. If he didn't, his bad luck, not mine.
I'll check back later. Gotta get out of these "good" and not so comfortable clothes. Both granddaughters are here for a sleepover tonight. Somebody here is crazy, and it isn't me.

I would ask, plead with, anyone that is considering going back to WE Blog at the end of the month to seriously reconsider that choice.
We lost the battle with the WE Blog Editors. They took the easy way out and blamed the problem on Typepad and Kansas.com and the weather and Alberto Gonzalez and Joe Wilson.
That is nonsense. It is EASY to check IP addy's and ban one or two or three. Last year, they accindently banned MY IP addy rather than the poster that was trolling me. WE Blog Editors failed to resolve the issue. I took care of it through Typepad.
Anyway, I am convinced that we can make a home for more reasonable bloggers here on WV. Your nic is protected and that means a lot. Futhermore, I am sure that the hosts here will be much more reasonable in dealing with racist and homophobic posters.
Rather than make April 1 a day to return, let's make it a day to invite the reasonable bloggers from WE to join us in an open and respectful forum.
Let's give this a chance. WE Blog is not going to change nor are they going to be receptive to input from the bloggers. Our hosts have been magnificent in responding to us. Let's give them the respect that they deserve.
To leave and return to WE Blog on April 1 would be unfair to our current hosts and would only legitimize the tactics of Khan, GSher, Fleet, SOB, JM and Golf Nut.
Let's stay with this TOGETHER. Let's show some solidarity. Let's collectively reject the environment of WE Blog and move on to better things.
We can do this!!!
Let's do it right - together.
BTW - Republican/khan wants to get J R banned - like he wanted to get me banned for "junking up" the thread.

Not in the least. No. Negative. No chance.
But what I am saying is that the WE Blog Editors have chosen to blow us off. The right wingers are already claiming victory because "new" liberals have shown up on the blog. They are actively beating down and even threatening liberals. The new "king" of the blog is the self-appointed "Republican."
I would never presume to tell anyone what to do in. It would be presumptious of me to even say that it is your choice.
I my view, going back will be seen as a victory by the right wing, nothing will change and the left will still be subject to attacks on their patriotism, nic-switching wingnuts and trolling.
If we are united on this blog, we can invite those of a differing politcal opinions and still maintain a civil blog atmosphere.
For some obvious reasons, I have a notorious reputation on WE Blog, however, much of that stems from my initial experiences on the blog. I was seriously disturbed by the stalking of P Mom by KSGolfnut and the direct attacks on my patriotism by Fleetwood.
After those incidents, the right wingers jumped on me with both feet. Given my nature, I fought back. Being smarter than most (all) of the wingnuts, my retorts were more telling than their attacks on me. When it comes to verbal fisticuffs, I do not lose.
That having been said, I much prefer to discuss issues with civility and intelligence. Believe it or not, I am a nice, polite person with a great sense of chivalry (sorry I am 54) and decency.
In a perfect world, the liberals, progressive, true conservatives and moderates would move over to WV Blog and leave WE Blog to the reich wing attack artists like Fleet, Nut and Khan/JM.
All I am asking is that we all consider leaving WE Blog behind and making this our home.

Dang, Dar, you're just a mere child. I'll be 55 in June. Now that's old!!!!
Actually, I am feeling old because my youngest, my son just turned twenty (ouch) and he can beat me up. Really, he doesn't beat me up, he just wraps his arms around me and PICKS me up until I scream at him to let me go.
How humiliating is that?

WSC, I choose to let the wingers own weblog.
Seeing that it has become a society of lies, dirty tricks, uncalled for hatred, etc., who wants to 'win'?
What a hollow victory,
if those things are the spoils of the fight.
I'm not discouraging anybody from going there,
I'm only stating my own views on this.
I have gone cold turkey, deleted my weblog link, and have not been back.

I found a brand-new (to me) word! I really like this word and what it stands for. In case it might be new to you too here is what wiki says about UBUNTU. I think it describes "us."
ubuntu (ideology)
* "Humanity towards others"
* "I am because we are"
* "I am what I am because of what we all are"
* "A person 'becomes human' through other persons"
* "A person is a person because of other persons"
A popular definition of ubuntu is, "the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity.
A person with ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed.

Linda and Tracy, and anyone else, are you familiar with the "100th Monkey" story? I'm not sure I can tell it exactly, but it lends credence to what you are saying.
Bill Hicks also had a great bit about it and it is imortalized in "A Ride is Just A Ride". I dont know if it is widely available on DVD, but it used to be shown on cable in Austin all the time.
I do believe that we are all interconnected. Like Garth Brooks says in "We Shall Be Free". Jeebus, I need more coffee if I am going from John Prine and Bobby Bare to Garth!
I'm glad today that I am connected to you guys!!!!!

I think I might be the most wonderful cook any of you have ever met! From the smells I'm making this asumption. I'll let you know later. A "little bird" told me to get out the granite roaster and put a corned beef with some garlic, onion, pepper flakes -- all covered over with beer -- into the oven. I've cored a cabbage and an apple and have thick slices ready to add along with some red potatoes (wish they were smaller but..)
lol
longhorn, I thank you MUCH!
I'm planning to have this ready not long after Wayne (hubby) gets home from the golf game and I'm not planning to cook again today! Looks like plenty and I have some rye bread, sauerkraut, spicy mustard and thousand island dressing (seems that is a preference??), and swiss cheese so maybe we can make this a weekend meal.
I need to do some work in the yard. I finished cutting off some ornamental grass and found it was already greening under last year's dead growth so I really need to get busy cleaning up after ole' man winter. I cleaned leaves overanoverandover last fall but I have all the leaves from all the neighbors who didn't bother gathered in my flower beds and under bushes... Do spring cleanup and fall cleanup get closer and closer each year!?
We are seriously thinking of down sizing. Our kids and their kids are way against this thought, but if they want us to stay they best get over here and help in this big yard!

Linda, FWIW, downsize; your lineal descendants just want to keep things "as they are" or as they recall, and won't be over to help with the yard on any regular basis. Believe me, they'll get over it.
We just went through this with my mother; best thing that she has done for herself. Yes, there is one sibling nursing a bit of a grudge; but she wasn't there too often to help with the drudge work, and the rest of us, who were helping out with this on quite a regular basis, now have more time to spend with HER, rather than her yard, etc.

I looked over at the other place. I think I should refrain from going there - it is too tempting to inject a small bit of truth there. My latest temptation was Paul Rossell insisting that Clinton took the U.S. out of the Kyoto agreement. Shaking my head...
If you read factual accounts, Clinton did not like the stringency of Kyoto, but kept our negoiators at work with the rest of the world in hopes of hammering out an agreement that was not so draconian. Bush signalled he would pull out, the rest of the nations figured he was not serious about global warming, forged ahead and came up with targets that were not as high as orignially considered. A reasonable agreement without U.S. participation. Just like almost everything else, Bush handled this deal exactly wrong. Have we forever given up our role as a leader in the world? We have at least for two more years, I fear.

Good God, what a beautiful day!!! This is almost too good to be true. I walked over to the store to pick up a couple of things (why does a couple of things cost $45?) and I could not believe the weather. Gorgeous!!!
A few random thoughts.......
To my friend Tracy, take care young man. I wish you and your family well in this time of difficulty.
To my friend Farm Grrl, that was a very sweet note you sent to Dub-Dog - very nice. You should be commended.
To that newly old guy, Darwin, I hope your b'day was everything you had hoped it would be. If you start feeling old, put Inna Gadda Da Vida on the player, crank up the jams and alternately play air guitar and air drums. You will begin to feel younger in no time.
To that fine old lady, Linda Inks, it most certainly sounds like you have the Mojo going today. Enjoy your yard and your cooking. We can compare notes tomorrow - and determine bragging rights for us amatuers.
To an equally fine lady, Pre, hang with us lousy liberal losers (ha!) and we can work through this together.
To VT and others that I may have missed - have a great day and enjoy this wonderful weather and the great B'Ball games on the tube.
Y'all have a great day - I'll be back later!!!
And one more thing, for any Reich Wingers from WE Blog that may be lurking about.....

Will,
Since we both used the same terrific recipe I will give you we may have both enjoyed excellent corned beef and cabbage. You won't best me this time!
It was good! The corned beef was very tender, very tasty, and same for the cabbage. The potatoes could have used some gravy. Those juices left were very salty and I didn't have any heavy cream (like WE need to stock that!) so I didn't have gravy. The apples (I got the new cooking times) were sweet and added the perfect taste to the meal.
Ah, it is a good day.

Wel, Linda Inks, I am glad that yours came out well. My son works midnight shift, going in about 11:00 PM, so we usually have dinner about nine. I just popped my into the oven a few minutes ago. Already, it smells delicious.
I am going to make my potatoes in a seperate pot, since my son is a bit picky, but I have filled the roaster with onions, carrots and beer. I have to admit that I hated to fill the pot with good (drinkable) beer, so I bought a 32 oz of Miller High Life to add to the beef. God, am I a cheap bastard or what?
I am going to be adding the cabbage in a few hours along with the apples. I wimped out and BOUGHT a loaf of good quality rye bread rather than bake my own, like I would have a clue how to bake bread.
Damn, this has been a great day. My house is already clean. The freakin' cats are sleeping as is my son. The laundry is already done and I am just chillin' with a cold one and groovin' on some damned good b'ball. I just love March Madness. I am watching Louisville and A & M right now. Being originally from Kentucky, I am most definitely rooting for the Cardinal.
Have a good one!!!!!

Sorry about the juices Linda. I use cream in my coffee so I always have it here. And I look like it too :) I just put butter on my potatoes when I eat them if I dont have gravy. I'm sure glad the rest turned out well.
If you didnt eat all the taters, they'd be good tomorrow morning chopped and browned in butter and scrambled with eggs and chopped corned beef.
Then the reubens in the evening of course! It's a good weekend to be Irish.

Jim Hightower puts out a monthly 4 page newsletter that's full of interesting info. Its called _The Hightower Lowdown_. In the March 2007 issue he lists the coporations that contributed and how much to the Dems and Repubs. The Repubs had in 2006 a decided advantage with Corporate Money - I did not calculate it, but it looks like a 10 to 1 advantage over the dems in the number of corps and amounts of cash.
If you are interested in voting with your dollars, here are some corps who gave the majority of their money to the Dems:
FOOD & BEVERAGE COMPANIES
E & J Gallo Winery
Southern Wine and Spirits
Charmer Sunbeld Group
Astrale e Terra Winery (Dems did will with wineries)
RETAIL STORES
Gap, Inc. (Gap, Old Navy, Forth & Towne)
Costco Wholesale (when can we get one in ICT?)
Barnes & Noble
RESTAURANTS
Riese Organization (own TGI Friday's)
AGRIBUSINESS
Plum Creek Hollow Farm
Flo-Sun, Inc.
Connel Company
Florida Sugar Cane League (these last 3 corps involved with sugar)
ENTERTAINMENT & LODGING
I'm going to skip the Indian casinos
H Group Holding (Hyatt, Summerfield Suites)
>>>The National Basketball Association<<< (a surprise)

I thought it was funny that sugar companies, wine companies, Nat'l Basketball Association, throw in a good book store and a lower-cost discount house SUPPORT Democrats with their contributions. Rings true, doesn't it? That 10 to 1 advantage for the Repubs rings true too.
Basketball has been really exciting today! I can't remember when so many games went into overtime. I love the close games until KU is in one.

The other Blog seems to be having there problems also, with it pretty much being Khan talking to himself. Most of the regulars on the Blog seem to have departed also. JM/Khan must be on cloud nine since he has the Blog to himself and he is the self appointed "King of the Blog." If you were to remove his posts and the replies to his, that Blog would have less than half of ours.
But you are correct, Linda Inks, if we want this to work, we must be more active and more inclusive. I would like to see some of our less liberal friends joins us.
Otherwise, what we will have accomplished is the death of TWO blogs.
And I do not think that is what we wanted to do.

It seems strange that on that other blog, even the regulars on the right are no longer posting. Fleet is rarely there, GSher has backed off, Nuts has posted three times in the last two weeks and several others are MIA or only make token appearances.
In my mind (a rather scary place to visit) the WE Blog hit the avalanche tipping point with the debut of GSher and RepubliKhan. GSher is a nasty old lady, but Khan is obviously someone that has spent a lot of time on WE Blog. Personally, I think Khan is Golf Nut, while most everyone else thinks he is JM. Regardless, he knew the drill from the opening bell.
It is a bit ironic, GSher and Khan have ruined WE Blog for both the left and the right.
It is too bad that the WE Blog Editors have chosen to do nothing about the issues. It could have been handled very easily. Now it looks like WE Blog is going to die. To avoid the same fate ourselves, we need to have an influx of new ideas to stimulate debate.
Let WE Blog die or become the self congratulatory home of GSher and Khan.
But we need to move on.

The republican list is a lot longer, hence my going with the short version. If you email my your snail-mail address, I will mail you the newsletter and thus let 'you' recycle it.
Visited Blog X. It is dead, creeky, and very dry over there. It really is sorta sad. I think Phillip's invite back was pretty serious. They know what is going to happen, if we are not there.
It takes a lot of time to dispute lie after lie. Blogging there is not much fun. What is the point of that, really?
Take care friends,
Steven

This WE Blog Open Thread (03-17-07) has 20 posts versus the 03-10-07 Open thread which had 85. No really important difference there if you believe Republican/kahn/JM. What a laugh...
Those folk have lied to themselves for so long, they have no idea what they are talking about. Very sad.

Good morning world!
It's going to be a beeeutiful day in kakeland! How many years does that go back?
The war in Iraq goes into year five. I know everyone who has posted here (see that as past tense -- posted) agrees on this subject and we have said our words many times. I still think Bush told the truth (once) when he said ending the war wasn't his problem; it would be up to the next president.
I hope Wichita gets one or more of those "possibilities" of rain I saw in the forecast for next week. I've been working in my yard and it needs any and all possibilities of moisture. If we stay here we need an irrigation system or loads of cement. Vaughn, we will probably heed your excellent advice and look to move. We talked last evening and plan to find a place within the next couple of years then put this one on the market.
I found out last evening Mary Caruso (I don't know Mary, and don't know if she comes to this place) has a brother Rob who has been a coworker of my husband for many years. It really is a small world, huh?
My dog wants to go walking to the park where often I let her run off leash. The smells there are more interesting than in her own yard, don't ya know!? She probably will find some smell mail that needs a response.
Rock...Chalk...Jayhawk -- GO KU!

Hey all! Sorry, I'm still busy for a few hours, but I'll be back to blogging later. Dont give up. Posts always go down over the weekend, and yesterday was a holiday. Plus, I dont know about there, but HERE, it's gonna be almost 80 and no wind, so I think lots of folks are outside.
Does anyone know Infernal B? If IB and Hard Truth were not posting and giving them someone to argue with, there would only be a handful of posts there. I agree, that khan is more likely nutz, as he is too intelligent to be JM. SOB has been gone. Maybe SOB is JM? Sounds more like the old joe blow.
And I see williams is back to posting as williams, not fleetie?
Stick together guys. I think the impact of the boycott will be greater this week than last. I totally agree though that we need topic and posts here to keep us involved.
DD, you could be right, that this will be the death of WE blog, and this blog will just fade off in the distance. The good news? WE here have control of that, and if we CHOOSE to make this our home, and get active here, it will be good. The bad news? It depends on us! heheheheeheheheheh
Linda, how were the Reubens? I wonder how Clarkie liked his meal. Not that I have any ego involved in my cooking and recipes. heheheheh. You have no idea how many cook books I have started writing, only to abandon later.
Who said "perfect is the enemy of good"?
Keep postin' guys. Keep postin'!

Good freakin' morning to you all!!! Happy Sunday. Happy "It looks like Springtime!"
As usual, a few random thoughts........
My dinner did not turn out as well as planned, not due to the recipe, but due to the relatively poor quality of cut I bought. It was much more fatty than I had expected. Other wise, it was quite good.
In truth, I am much more of a grill/smoker type of (typical) guy, so a relative failure in the kitchen is not a real black mark. I will make CB and C again, but next time I will make sure that I buy a better cut. I have enough left for Ruebens and even I can't mess that up, especially since I hand trimmed all the fat now.
Everyday is a new day in the Tourney. Yesterday the Jinx Master was in full dream killer mode, but hopefully today is a new story.
My rooting schedule for today - if there is a team in brackets it is the one I think will win despite my rooting for the other.....
TN, Purdue (Fla), VT, WI, Memphis, Winthrop (OR), KS and TX.
I am trying to keep my mind of the fact that we are about to enter our fifth year in Iraq. It is almost beyond comprehension. It is truly a nightmare come true and it was all predicted. What really pisses me off is that I (along with millions more)was right about the potential for civil war from the beginning.
Damn, and there are still people that are defending Bush. There are still people making excuses. There are still people claiming that victory is on the horizon. Damn, there are still people saying that this Surge is working.
Don't get me started........
The weather is great today and I am probably going to take a walk to work off some of yesterday's dinner. Taking a walk makes me a bit sad, since I used to take my best buddy with me all the time. He loved to go for walks and just the sight of his leash got him fired up. It has been almost eleven months and I still miss him like it was yesterday.
Have a great day folks, I'll be back later.....

The "smell mail" thing was indeed clever.
The other day, on the other blog, Linda asked about my job. I am going to send an email to her about that because I have some paranoia about my overt and covert activities being too widely disseminated. Mary Caruso knows what I do and because of her work, current and former, she knows people I have some network connections to. But it occurred to me that others here may have no idea about what I do and where I do it. This link to the first reader's letter gives a hint:
http://www.kansas.com/mld/kansas/news/editorial/16...
If anybody is interested, I will send a copy of my email that I am sending to Linda. This is not as dramatic as it sounds, but being prudent is sometimes not a bad idea, and that has been driven home to me all the more by the arrival of some playmates from Salina.

Reuben’s were greeaat! I had a well prepared corned beef as the building block and even I can't mess up things that come in a package or jar -- like cheese, thousand island dressing... I shredded the corned beef so it was kinda fluffy (I can't for the life of me come up with the right word although I know fluffy isn't) and used a very light rye cause without the seeds (store bought stuff). I grilled with butter like I was making a grilled cheese. Did I do right? If there is a better way, I still have some of all the ingredients.
The cookbooks don't get finished because you are a perfectionist... I already had that one figured out! Maybe someday when you aren't so busy using the recipes you will put them down on paper. My daughter found a site where you can have books published online -- you choose the cover, etc. and don’t need a publisher or need to print a huge quantity (ONE is ok!). If you want to know the link, I'll get if from her.
Won’t be the last time I ask for your advice on cooking!

If I hear "This is ooooouuuurrrrr country" from Mellencamp ONE more time, I am going to go take a bus to Indiana and go on a murderous rampage.
For one thing, the sons is an OBVIOUS rip off of "This Land is My Land" by Woody Guthrie. That is perhaps THEE greatest song in the history of Americana. Secondly, Chevrolet is NOT "ooooouuuurrrrr country."
Okay, that is my bitch, now go back to your regular programing.

I haven't had a real Reuben sandwich since 1999 in Chicago at an Irish pub. It was so delish (yes, a perfect word!) that I doubt any other would beat it. Hard to believe that was almost 8 years ago. Time doesn't fly, it zooms.
A quick read-through of the open thread at blogX proved that the right is still slinging mud, evidenced by GS (or maybe republican) posting to infernal B as INfernal. Don't know what that's all about. Probably nothing more than a little jab to see if there's a response, and then the real insults can start again.
HAS anyone here posted there, except regarding Nathan's return?
One more thing about there, and I'll cease and desist. Hank has rabidly been against everything Fitzgerald. Perhaps Hankie doesn't know that Fitzy is a Republican. And so, I believe, is Joe Wilson (of Wilson/Plame fame). I sure wish I had all my old links so I could prove both. Not having them puts me at a disadvantage, because I just can't take the time to search for them.
Oh, well, have a good one today, all. I'll be back later, when I get some things accomplished. :)

Does anyone else want to take a shot at it?

Actually, I'm pretty sure Joe Wilson is a Democrat, the fact that he worked in Repubican "Administration" notwithstanding.
And with Fitz, Hank's obedient hatred is no surprise: apparent, Karl Rove wanted a different U.S. Attorney for that position in Illinois, someone from within the state who wouldn't be such a bulldog on corruption. Sen. Peter Fitzgerald (R-IL) told him to take a hike and hired Patrick Fitzgerald, instead.

The criteria for being hired to go to Iraq on the civilian side, was total Bush support and support for Roe v Wade, etc. A person's experience and comptence was not a factor in the selection process!
Garner , the first Kahuna, had about 30 noticte before departing, with the 2 guys he had found to help him.
Bremmer, the Giant Kahuna, started off by firing 10-15,000 teachers because they were Bathists, even though they had either no choice, or did so for salary raises.
Now it's 5 years later, and I don't find any changes for the positive, although I'm sure there must be some.
What a giant waste of.......(you fill in the blanks)!

Very interesting. On that same thread, Republican talks about having served as a refueling tanker capacity in the USAF from '81-'92. I believe that the poster named "Eier," who I called out as JM/RepubliKKKhan, made the same claim back in February.
Very interesting. That one goes in the evidence file to be checked later for CF's eventual guerilla assault.

So with that, Pa sticks his head in the hole, looks around and yells back,

Pa proceeds to pull his head out of the hole, then starts yelling, "Ma!

Tracy, I hope your family found comfort at the funeral and the visiting that usually follows. Also that the effort of the "trip" wasn't too difficult on your Dad.
It's real dreary this morning, but so warm. Feels like spring for sure. Cross your fingers and toes for some of that possible rain this week. Maybe it will come at night -- now I'm thinking of the school kids who are out this week for spring break. I hope they get hours of good weather to ride bikes, skateboard, and do something outside. They sit inside in front of screens too much nowadays (imho). I do too! So, I'm off to walk with the dog and do some pee marking, maybe chase a squirrel. Maybe I'll let the dog handle those last two activities.

The funeral was exceptional, very few tears!
Uncle was 84, lived a nice full life and was quite ready to go. He told the preacher so every time he saw him. I didn't know that he did a year on the Italian front lines in WW2, and then re-enlisted for Korea.
