What I think this morning?
Dubya, I think that under your Wichita low-lifes section, we need a space to keep all the comments from flamers, trolls, vandals, nic switchers, and other undesireables.
Serving several purposes.
1) A public log of their comments, for those interested.
2) A sort of public 'stocks' for display.
3) A record of infractions up to the point of being banned.

The next best thing is the ratings system, where it actually is a popularity contest.
The most unpopular are dropped from being able to comment.

Suggested feature?

The email feature is very nice, but… You know users are never happy with the application.

Would it be possible to set up a google-esk feature for notifications? Like that little floating panel in the bottom right of the screen that scrolls up to let you know of new posts?

If y’all have access to or use .Net, I don’t think it would be so hard, maybe set it up on an rss feed or something? Shoot, you could probably do it with Java script as well. I don’t know anything about CF, but that may work as well.

TRACY,

I like the latter suggestion. Numbers 1-3 above reward bad behaviors.

No one has any duty to trolls. None. Period. Being here is a privilege, not a right. Banning them is the siteholder's call. They don't need to compile records or explain themselves. When the privilege is abused, that's it.

Paul,

There's a qualitative difference between someone with whom I can disagree versus someone who is merely disagreeable. I don't agree with most of what you post, but you are obviously not a troll. It's a question of whether the person is abusive and a bully.

I, for one, have no desire to oblige people who want nothing but to be bullies and abusers. They don't belong here.

Interesting idea, it might work.
I also like the idea of having some sort of indicator to show recent postings.

There are private type blogging sites - one is sponsored by a far-right Repbulican group - Cindy Ducket and that activist who outed Paul Mirecki are involved with it. I have tried a few times to penetrate it, with no luck.

What is available here is a site where the owner can stipulate who posts, but everyone can read. I sent out an email yesterday saying that I did not think that was necessary unless troll droppings were left for us. Some of you saw last night's visit.

Aaron and Dave said they would look at more security for a site. I am thinking high security would not be a cheap endeavor, however.

Let me know what you're interested in.

There are some knats flying around. Maybe they are fruit flies now that I think about that over ripe pear in the fruit basket. It's warm so it all ripens quickly and if not removed can spoil the whole basket.

Did anyone get too much rain? There were some flood warnings so I hope everyone stayed high and dry. I finally remembered to turn over my rain gauge -- this morning -- so don't know how much Wichita recorded yesterday. My spring flowers are all in bloom and looking good.

Amen to that CF, it was more of a joke referring to TRACY’s suggestion at a /popularity/ contest. At that I would surely lose !!! :->

I think that by giving trollers attention, they have achieved their goal. What about just dropping a note to the host informing them of the troller? The host discreetly obliterates said post and we move forward?

Of course CF is correct. It is totally up to dubya.
The flamer has been ignored and not a problem.
But, even if it's one little annoying post, with nothing really to ban or censor for, repeatedly posting just to annoy adds up in my score book.
How many strikes are allowed is up to dubya.
It's obvious they come here for one reason only,
to annoy and disrupt.

Hello, my blog friends. It's CapnA from an undisclosed location.

A few quick points before I continue on my merry way in RL.

1. Of course, SOB came over here and tried to disrupt us on the other open thread. That's what JM-Khan-SOB-Eier-Uncle William-Right Angle does. Some people volunteer at local schools, some people play golf, some people get metal detectors and look for coins--this inDUHvidual trolls people and disrupts them on-line. He is apparently a self-loathing person who needs to has his own self-hatred reinforced by others.

Anyway, I'm not interested in his motives. I'm interested in shutting him down.

DUBYA--YOU SHOULD NOW POST HIS IP ADDRESS.

By itself, it won't do much, but it's a start. To those who are interested, I have a theory about how IP addresses can be used to catch nic-switchers and other ways we can use it to protect ourselves, but I'm not going to post it on the WEB.

E-me if you're interested.

2. What's with all the lefty posts on the web from people like "Infernal B" and "Wayreth"? We don't see these nics for like 18 months and suddenly they're filling the void left by us boycotters. One possibility might be that they are one or some of us still posting (shame on you!), or they may be former lurkers who now feel the need to step up to the plate.

If the latter, then that was a positive we didn't expect. It's even possible that they are "straw men" posts from the reich-wingers, but I doubt it because they are too well-written for the most part.

3. IF AND WHEN WE GO BACK, we should have a list of rules that we will "enforce" on ourselves as well as others. I assume that these rules will be based on the kinds of behavior that we complained about to the editors--no overt profanity (which blocks the sites from filters, btw), no insults based on sexual preference, ethnic/racial group, or religious preference, no nic-switching and trolling etc.

4. Republican accused Roscoe of being a "wolf in sheep's clothing" on an open thread. Are they turning on each other because they are essentially spew masters and they need targets?

Yes, they are.

5. BTW, DUBYA, if you can check locations of IP addresses, you might want to check this one. No one will believe me if I tell them otherwise, hehehe . . .

I'm not necessarily for rewarding those who post bad things by giving them the "flamer award" of the week. ;) However, ad hominem attacks and such can be left out.

Paul, I like the idea of an RSS feed here. I'd make pretty heavy use of that. I downloaded the C# RSS screensaver that was for the C# express edition of visual studio and found it to be pretty neat, added a bit more to it.

Capn,

IP addresses can be used to sometimes get geographic locations. However, using something like Tor and Privoxy I can mask where I am easily enough. I don't use that, but if I thought there were a need to I would. Of course if I were that worried about it, I'd also be using PGP for personal emails and such.

In a nutshell(and overly simplified), Tor bounces around traffic information so much so that it eventually just can't be traced back to it's origin. Privoxy, uses another computer to look like yours, so you connect to it, it connects to the website and doesn't let the website know anything about you personally. Used together, one would have a very difficult time tracking the actual location of someone.

@Paul "No Headshot
OK, I feel like a MySpace reject. How do you add friends to your spot on the site they give you here?"

The adding a friend thing is still a little clunky, we are under development on that piece and should have some enhancements in the next couple days.

In the meantime, if you are logged in to InstantSpot, you can visit the desired InstantSpot site (the one you want to add) and click on the green Plus icon in the toolbar("Add this site to my friends") and it will add them as a friend.

Thanks for your patience!

We are very near to releasing a secured area of each InstantSpot that would allow the site owner to pick and choose who may leave messages.

It will be up to Dubya if he decides to make use of that section.

What you guys might do is look at a real discussion system, instead of a linear "blog" as exists here or at WE.

You could have something with verified user sign-up (open or by invitation) to stop nic-stealing, something with one or more moderators to control offensive posts by warning or banning users, something with threads of conversation that anyone can start (so you don't have to wait for the admin to start an "open thread" or threads about topics of interest), a system that tells who's online at the moment, a system that allows formatted posts, a system that allows attachments, signatures, etc. etc. etc.

I think that everything that posters have wished for here today is available

These systems are readily available, and some are open-source, meaning free for the asking. I suggest to start by looking at www.phpbb.com. You'll need to find a hosting service, but there are ones available for $50 or less per year, or maybe even free.

Also, a person's IP address changes, even if they don't switch service providers. So banning an IP address from Cox means that in the future, a legitimate poster who happened to be assigned that banned IP address will be banned.

Steve,

I concur with Danny. There are plenty of things to do here in Wichita. Come visit in May during our annual River Festival (May 11-19) http://www.wichitariverfestival.com/index.cfm
But be prepared for huge crowds. *grin*

The shopping is pretty good, the schools are as good as most, housing is affordable (or so I've heard), the drivers are attrocious, but if you like fast food, you'll be in heaven.

I'm in the house for lunch and I thought I would check on my friends here. Jesus H. Christ. I'm not even posting and I am STILL the freakin' topic of conversation? WTF? I am NOT that interesting.

Tracy, WTF is so scary about me? That I tell the truth? That I am not afraid? That I have some talent as a writer? I was a published author LONG before the internet.

Why is the reich wing obsessed with me? Of all the posters here and not here, sollie, why do you want to know about me? Certainly not that you have missed me. Nor have I missed you or any of your operation rescue buddies. I see you and Danny, heheheh, are having a dialog. Interesting.

Just FYI sollie, a GREAT writer makes the reader feel exactly what they are feeling. You twit. Saying that you can feel my rage is a compliment. One I certainly would not have solicited from you. Why? 'Cause I suspect you have no soul and no feelings. Parroting someone else's lines about my posts?

Here is a clue. Go away. Then you wont have to feel anything from my posts. This is an extremely busy time of year for me. I own three businesses in addition to the wheat and cattle operation. I have a lover. I have friends here and all over the world. I have a life. I have a community that loves me. In fact, most people who know me love me.

And you?

Never mind. I'm not interested enough to read your response. I'm going to eat and then enjoy the beautiful day outside. You just keep talking to yourself. I know you love an appreciative audience.

Jesus wept!

Look, I’m not picking fights. She is FUN!!! Maybe passion is the right word for it. You all have to admit that some of the fun from BOTH blogs is gone when everyone pretty much agrees with each other. It is a much nicer atmosphere, as in no name calling and what not, but isn’t it also a tad boring?

Look, squaring off with KFG/LongHorn really made my day. The woman is so rapid fire, she really makes you think fast; cerebral calisthenics.

Tracy proves my point. She is hard. Hard as damn nails. I don’t agree with a lot of what she posts, hell I have no clue on what she is talking about when it comes to Kansas issues, but the woman speaks her mind, stands up to challenges and knows her shit.

THAT’S WHAT MAKES IT FUN. When someone has a differing and energetic view point than yours and you get into a debate, fight, argument, whatever you want to call it, THAT IS FUN!!!! I think she is off her rocker sometimes, but damn, who isn’t?

Are you serious with this? That I attacked her? Did you not see what we both posted? I seem to see far more negativity from one of the two posters. And I don’t really give a shit. That is who she is. Hell that’s what I like about her. I am serious about the condolences, but that needs to end. If she doesn’t take them seriously, her loss. But I don’t want to be misconstrued. If she hates me, so be it. If she doesn’t give two shits about me so be it. But when it comes to debating, we seem to make a go of it.

Whatever either of you two thinks, I have a respect for her. I don’t accept many of her view points, but I appreciate her fast wit you know? Damn, this sounds like sucking butt. Well, that’ll be sorted out next debate I reckon.

Beyond that, she is a big girl, she can handle herself. As you’ve seen. Too bad she is so tied up or maybe we could have dished things out. Now I’m here with her big brother stand in.

Don't even try to get cute, Paul. One of the reasons that we left WE Blog was because of the ad hominem attacks on Farm Grrl and others, myself included. Grrl does NOT need me to defend her by any means, but, as I said, an attack on her is an attack on me.

My initial comment to you was to watch it when it came to unfounded criticism of Farm Grrl. I did not say you attacked her. I indicated to you that an attack on her would not be tolerated.

This is not WE Blog where attacks are just part of the game. You may have noticed that I have not used any profanity or personal insults. I have only asked that you resist any temptation you may have had to attack someone that I consider to be my friend.

To those concerned,

As I view it, personal attacks aren't needed. Yup, I held a dialog with Paul, pretty much about programming and related concepts/languages. I won't stand much for anybody attacking anybody. Attacking an idea on the other hand is the point of conversation when two different points of view exist. Show flaws the reasoning of the other argument and defend your own.

I suspect that likely, on some issues there would be many here who would take issue with my own views. But the question comes down to, how personal do I take it? How personal will others take it when I disagree with their view point? As an example, I'm pro-life, I'm pro-life to the point I believe abortion is wrong, the death penalty is wrong, and war is wrong.

I don't expect anybody here to trust/believe me initially, and as such, that will be reciprocated at first(but I already said that earlier). I'll probably start off by talking about things that don't have much in the way of politics in general.

Danny - The issues are attacks on the WE Blog directed at Farm Grrl because she is lesbian. Those come from the right wing and they are used in an attempt to discredit her opinion on most any subject.

You may recall that I welcomed both you and Sol to this Blog. I meant that, but I can assure you that I have no interest if your intent is to turn this into WE Blog II.

That is why I immediately went on the offensive when SOB showed up. I saw his comments on WE Blog and I knew that he showed up just to make trouble.

I have nothing against Sol/Paul, but we need to have an understanding that this is not going to be the same old stuff from WE Blog.

WSClark,

You'll have no worries from me about it. I could careless what happens in the bedroom. I happen to use marriage as a more religious meaning(man and woman), and wouldn't see an issue with civil unions to get those who want to be together covered under group insurance plans, tax breaks associated with it, etc.

I'm kind of weird that way I guess, conservative on some issues and liberal on others(perhaps a moderate is more correct but I'll tend conservative at first). Like I said earlier, I read headlines and decide what they mean and read up related sources and draw my own conclusions. I generally avoid media sources for reliable information. I do listen to Rush, but don't follow him on everything.

If you want to get down to it WS, you just attacked longhorn far worse than I, you just outed her sexual preference. Why would you do that? Isn’t it her place to reveal that info to a public blog as she sees fit?

Trying to overpolice this blog is going to kill it.

That point is already well-known and has been for a long time. I did not out her, just like Kerry did not out Mary Cheney.

So don't lecture me, Sol. I also checked the previous Open Thread and I see that you have managed to to get cross ways with Linda Inks. For your information, an attack on her is what prompted this boycott in the first place.

All I am telling you, Sol/Paul, is that this is not WE Blog. As I said, a wiseman would not need to be told twice.

Wow, WS. Did you read the post with Linda? She misunderstood something I wrote. It had nothing to do with her.

Longhorn prefers… well that was public knowledge on the other blog, not here. So if you want to be the police for this blog, write yourself a ticket.

This isn’t lecturing. If you don’t want this to be WE blog, then look at what you yourself are doing. You have become hyper defensive to a state you can’t see that you have done far worse than what you started out trying to police. Wow.

And isn’t that a tactic of the WE blog too? To start bringing in other issues to cloud the issue at hand? Linda? That just came up? You went back through the threads to find something else to cloud the issue with? Dang.

Tracy, I'm sorry if I offended you. I am not angry with you. Clark, thanks for the good words buddy.

Why would I EVER be offended if someone "outs" me? Being a lesbian is not something to be ashamed of. So why would I be harmed by someone outing my orientation? Jesus wept.

Isnt it funny that the same people who said Valerie Plame couldnt be outed are the same ones now who say "OOOOH dont out Mary Cheney or farmie!" Jesus wept, there might be ONE person on the planet who doesnt know I am a lesbian, but I presume they have been drinking yak milk for the last five hundred years. Having come out on the front page of the Hays Daily, in front of 33,000 supposed readers, I hardly think Clark is breaking new ground anywhere.

Linda Inks is one fine woman and helped me keep the conversaton going here when others were too busy to post. She's gone now. The returning wingnuts just turn a lot of us libs off. And if anyone wonders how we know this?

The internets are really a series of tubes... heheheheh

We do have private emails. Something the wingnuts wont be monitoring since the broadcast list has been pared down to reflect those who can be trusted. Or you techie types work a little magic with spyware. heheheheheh. Funny how those things can backfire sometimes....

This will be the last time address this with you, Paul.....

Don't give me any bullshit about being hyper defensive about anything. Your comment about Farm Grrl was a deliberate bait - I know it - you know it - anyone that read it knows it. The comment about abortion was OBVIOUSLY directed at Linda, since it immediately followed her comment regarding her Congressman and his desire to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Nice try.

As for outing Farm Grrl......... most everyone here is from WE Blog. We regularly exchange e-mail on the subject of this blog and the other one. She was not outed, nor is there any reason to out her, since she is not a hypocrite about her sexuality. As she should, she does not hide it. It is not a subject for shame.

Farm Grrl is ALREADY digusted about moles and right wing trolls. I, for one, would like her to stay on this Blog.

As for looking for looking for something of yours? Don't flatter yourself. I went back to read the thread from the point I signed off last night. I could care less about your lame Hillary jokes. I was merely commenting that it was not just Farm Grrl that is unhappy with you, already.

Are you happy now, Paul? If you sought to be disruptive, you have accomplished your goal. Farm Grrl has already asked you to leave and Linda has had to ask you to leave her out of your jokes.

I have WASTED my afternoon trying to get you to realize that your attacks will not be tolerated.

Okay, granted that tracking IP addresses is not foolproof . . . far from it.

But neither is the lock on your front door. Neither is an alarm system, etc. etc.

Yes, someone could get cloaking software, yes someone could take their laptop to a wi-fi coffee bar, but it's a hassle, isn't it.

Just because someone can get around it doesn't mean it can't have some effectiveness.

By the way, we're already getting trolled over here.

Does anybody know who "It doesn't matter" is?

Because if we don't know who he is, he's not really welcome, IMHO.

Why are we setting ourselves up for more trolling since we all left the WEBlog precisely to get away from JM-Khan-Original Steve?

We'd better grow a pair and establish some safeguards or we're going to have the same thing here. We're already seeing it.

And that's another thing . . . who invited SolDevPaul?

The only reason he wasn't more of a problem on the WEBlog was because he didn't post that much.

It's not "over policing" that kills a blog. DemocraticUnderground runs the tightest ship on the WEB and they have had 28 MILLION posts in seven years.

It's underpolicing that kills a blog.

You are absolutely right, Capn'. Just witness my pissing contest with Sol/Paul. We don't need this BS. We can discuss issues respectfully without the attendant ad hominem stuff.

What really ticked me off was when I reread yesterday's Open Thread and saw that Sol/Paul tried to make really bad joke at Linda's expense.

I do not feel the need to be anyone's Knight in Shining Armor, but anyone new to this Blog needs to understand that ad hominem attacks will not be tolerated.

Your thoughts?

The devs are actually working on a forum-type system specifically for this site that will allow us to moderate much easier than this linear blog/comment format. That should help out a lot.

As far as the "trolling" goes, keep in mind that the FORUMS and the Friends areas are actually user-authenticated and we can track by IP too. Comments here are just that, comments. You have the problem of making it easy so people WILL leave comments vs. making it SECURE so people can't troll other's....it's difficult, to say the least.

Capn,

The two products I mentioned above are almost 5 minute setup times. The reason I mentioned them is security and secure software is a pain to setup, especially when dealing with a public forum.

A likely better idea would be to allow the moderator to ban certain users based on email addresses. However, with the proliferation of free email addresses even that isn't going to be foolproof(I use one myself). However, after blocking/banning someone enough times they are likely to quit eventually. Or could block whole groups of email domains, then allow specific email addresses from them.

"The internets are really a series of tubes... heheheheh" LH, thats actually a pretty good description believe it or not. However, the way he used it in context... well I had to shake my head. Especially after his explaining how he received an internet 3 days after it had been sent.

I never could see anything at the West Bank stage, so I never went to a concert there.

Whenever it was that the 5th Dimension was here (2 years ago?), they put a stage up in front of Century II (north side). Somewhere I have pics. There was another concert going on over on the east side, too. The crowds were a pain, but it was worth it, and I could see fairly well.

The Much-Needed Return of Pay-Go
While the House debates the course of the Iraq war today, the Senate has a chance to restore discipline to the federal budget, a first step in remedying years of damage from profligate tax cuts in the face of immense spending.

The Senate’s budget plan, now being debated, resurrects the so-called pay-go rule, which Congress allowed to expire in 2002. Pay-go, already adopted by the House, would require senators to pay for new spending on entitlement programs, like Medicare and farm supports, by either raising taxes or reducing other entitlement spending. It would also require Congress to make up forgone revenue from any new tax cuts by raising other taxes or cutting spending.

Some Republican senators oppose the pay-go rule on the ground that it would increase taxes, de facto, by forcing the Bush-era tax cuts to expire as scheduled after 2010. That’s untrue. The plan says only that if the cuts are extended, they should be paid for. It’s hard to fathom why anyone would have a problem with that. Congress’s own budget agency has warned that if the tax cuts are extended without offsets, the nation will face crippling deficits and unprecedented foreign debts in coming decades.

Some Democrats’ discomfort with pay-go is not as indefensible, but still off point. The typical argument is that adopting pay-go now would make it difficult to finance vital programs that the administration and previous Republican-led Congresses have neglected, like health insurance for poor children.

The problem is that no politician wants to say what must be said: some taxes have to be raised, for the sake of the nation’s children, veterans and others who are paying too high a price for the White House’s spendthrift ways.

Now is not the time to begin a full-scale debate on the tax code. That will require a new president, one with a true sense of responsibility. But currently, the government forgoes some $800 billion in revenue each year via hundreds of tax breaks. Some, like the mortgage interest deduction, are politically untouchable. But some others are loopholes that Congress could close to raise money for pressing needs. On the spending side, lawmakers could free up tens of billions of dollars by curbing Medicare overpayments, a move that has been recommended by Congress’s own advisory committee on Medicare.

A pay-go rule does not have to threaten vital programs — if the Democratically controlled Congress is willing to exert the leadership and the discipline that President Bush and a Republican-controlled Congress have not.

Another Martyr for Critical Thinking
More than anything else, Kris Helphinstine says he wanted to teach his students critical thinking. The part-time biology teacher at Sisters High School out in Oregon wanted, with all his heart and soul, to give his students accurate information and to get them thinking.

"Critical thinking is vital to scientific inquiry," says Helphinstine, who has a master's degree in science from Oregon State.

That's when he showed his class a PowerPoint presentation linking evolution, Nazi Germany, and Planned Parenthood.

Mr. Helphinstine found the Biology textbook provided by the district to be just a bit too dogmatic. It was lacking in accurate information. So he supplemented it with more objective material that just happened to be chock full of biblical references.

Parents in the district, not having benefited from the critical thinking skills taught by Mr. Helphinstine, mistakenly thought he was teaching creationism.

"He took passages that had all kinds of Biblical references," says parent John Rahm whose daughter is in the class. "It prevented her from learning what she needed to learn."

If only Rahm and other parents had been steeped in critical thinking skills they would have known better.

"I never taught creationism," insists Helphinstine. "I know what it is, and I went out of my way not to teach it."

He was fired Monday.

I came across a link in the WE blog that lead me here. As it is a public forum, I signed up. Didn’t know it was an invitation only party. I hung out because I think TRACY is funny as hell and usually has some enlightening things to say. LH is one of the most energetic debaters I have ever had a conversation with. I wasn’t in here to cause a disturbance or be disruptive. I am not part of the boycott or the He said/She said war going on.

It’s a shame. The blog used to be intelligent, vindictive, exasperating, infuriating, exhausting. Now it seems to be just an over policed sleeper.

So as I have no invite, I’ll monitor for a response if y’all so choose and leave you to your bidding.

Good day and y’all take good care of yourselves.

DemocraticUnderground gets around this by not permitting free e-mail addresses. You have to post your real home e-mail address that comes with your service provider.

Again, a too-too clever by half computer junkie could figure out how to get around it, but it would be a hassle and it would take time.

Soi / Dave--you don't have to leave. But you notice that nobody was yelling at anybody until you showed up. We left the WEBlog because it had become an utter crap-throwing fight, and you come over here and tell us how the blog is "over-policed"?

We didn't leave because the blog was "over policed." We left for the exact opposite reason.

You're entitled to your own opinion, but you're not entitled to come here to irritate us with it.

I do appreciate you admitting that the WEBlog is a ghost town compared to what it was. The CONs are working hard to convince themselves that it is "better" now.

BTW, any feedback on how we should go back if we go back?
