IMHO, you are a little edgy. Maybe it is from past arguments we had, maybe it is from treatment over at we blog. Unknown. But it was not an attack on you. Far from it. It was referencing Angelina adopting yet another baby. If you took it wrong, I already explained it to you. If you still take it wrong, sucks to be you. If you have some rebuttal ready, please do post it or hit my email – SolDevVB@GMail.com

You over reacted. Accept it. Move on. Pissing contest? Whatever man.

I came across a link in the WE blog that lead me here. As it is a public forum, I signed up. Didn’t know it was an invitation only party. I hung out because I think TRACY is funny as hell and usually has some enlightening things to say. LH is one of the most energetic debaters I have ever had a conversation with. I wasn’t in here to cause a disturbance or be disruptive. I am not part of the boycott or the He said/She said war going on.
It’s a shame. The blog used to be intelligent, vindictive, exasperating, infuriating, exhausting. Now it seems to be just an over policed sleeper.
So as I have no invite, I’ll monitor for a response if y’all so choose and leave you to your bidding.
Good day and y’all take good care of yourselves.

I know the 'charter' members agree on most points (granted every one is different and we all have different points on which we agree) but I think it's kinda nice to have differing opinions. As long as those opinions are not expressed in an inflammatory manner.
It is really easy to type out an opinion and since there is no verbal cues to indicate sarcasm etc., it is so easy to be misconstrued. I know misconstrued comments have happened in some of the behind the scenes emails.
I think that if we question the meaning behind a post we can courteously ask "what was meant by that - I'm taking it this way - did you mean it like that". Then if the original post was meant to be inflammatory then it can responded to accordingly.
Paul (I'm using you because you're the one getting so much heat right now), as long as you play nice then we'll play nice but like I said earlier, there are no verbal cues and we read it in black and white and it is up to the person reading on how it's will be received.
Now everyone get along and play nicely.

I didn't get in a pool this year either VT. First year in a long time I didn't even fill one out just for me. If past history tell me anything my bracket would be in bad shape had I filled one out.
But it's great to be a KU fan. My grandson is home for spring break and he will come over this evening for Grandma's cooking and to watch the game. I plan to enjoy every game they play and hope to see them play another. Even if they took the championship I wouldn't be finished watching them.

Linda, it's easy to get involved with a team (such as KU) who plays well. While I am hopeful of a third NCAA championship this year, they have done well to get to where they are. Even if they win it all, it will be my signal that it is time for basketball season (college) to be done, and to move on to somewhat more productive endeavors, while waiting impatiently for "Late Night" next fall. In regards to the post by Tracy about taxes and government spending(on yesterdays Open Thread), sounds simply put tax less - spend less, tax more - spend more. Over simplification of it, but I think it gets the point across.
However, I don't think the entire responsibility lies just in governments hands(not saying government can't do anything right), but I really am for a more minimalist government. I think some of the responsibility lies in our own hands. Take for instance, I qualified for healthwave while in school for my daughter(because my income was about $14k / yr working two jobs), I had health insurance through one of those jobs which covered her. I ended up electing not to take it, sure I could have had a little extra cash and gotten more of what I wanted, but I had what I needed. Perhaps this means our standards for who should be covered are not strict enough?
I guess what I'm saying is sacrifices need to be made all around. Just because someone qualifies for something doesn't mean that person should be taking advantage of it all the time. However, this is an individual thing, and in the long run should help to insure there is plenty left for when those who need it can have it.
I don't believe I need to government to help me accomplish something, if I want it bad enough I'll get off my duff and do something about it. What I perceive often in our society is people who believe their safety net is always going to be there, and I don't believe that is what some of the social programs are meant for.
While I know that some have stated the abuse of the system is low, I've heard from some who work in social work that abuse is probably between 15 to 20% of those who are taking advantage of these programs. I'm all for programs that end up helping someone get on their own feet and contribute(education, healthcare, etc). I'm just for less abuse of these systems and really making sure we've gotten those that need it and a lower number of those who do not.

VT, Our morning paper says the guy who did the ad Obama's campaign was blamed for was fired from his job; your link says he resigned. Always two sides to every story, huh?
If he hadn't made it look like Obama's crew had something to do with it maybe it wouldn't have gotten as much attention. It is a new age and the people have a voice more than ever. Will they not only blog their opinions, make their YouTube movies but also VOTE!
How long has it been since we actually elected anyone with a true majority of the people? Maybe it was the majority of people who bothered to vote.
I think our chances of really learning about the candidates increase when we get more people involved. We have a better chance of hearing and knowing the things they didn't put in their literature and ads. The things we really should know.
I welcome the involvement of more people in the political process but sure hope they take the single most important step available to each adult-aged citizen -- accepting our right and responsibility to vote.

Danny, Your opinion of social programs is mine too. Just becasue you qualify... Wasn't everything you said behind Clinton's welfare reform? Ya know, the help someone get on their feet but not take them to raise forever. The changes made by Clinton were the best in a long time and there is much room for more work and improvement on what he started.
Seems we've been "blessed" in more recent years with a bunch who get NOTHING done. That's one of the reasons why some of them were UNelected recently. I hope we UNelect more of them in 2008.

There are more people in the middle of things than on either end -- I HOPE. Both fringes are kinda scary to me.
Most scary (to me) are the ONE issue people. There are many important issues and if you concentrate on only one doesn't that mean many others might not get the attention they deserve?
I'm a liberal on much but definitely more financially conservative than the current president.
The truth is that government generates NO income. They take our money and give it away. Generally, conservatives give it away to business; liberals to individuals. I don't like generalities -- don't think many people do.

I did see An Inconvenient Truth. I am worried that if people can put their fingers in their ears and sing "lalalala" about GW, they are REALLY gonna balk on water issues.
Look at the wingnut dominated Kansas Legislature and TELL me they arent already ignoring the obvious. I read a great article the other day about why the reich wing so desperately clings to the idea that there is no GW or that it is not significantly caused by humans. I'll see if I can find the link again.
I am mystified why those who believe in god are so ANTI earth. Why they care about the legacy of gay marriage but the DONT care about the legacy they leave their children in terms of water and a clean environment.
Where the phuck do they think their children will spend all that precious capitalistic money they amass in their lifetimes?
On WATER? Jesus wept....

Witness the inaction of governor leadership on key environmental issues, and her actively and agressively harmful policies about water. And her whining that her hands are tied, and poor little ol' her cant do ANYTHING about the Holcomb coal fired plant.
Witness her friends, like Janis Lee and Josh Svaty supporting irrigation uber alles. Ethanol uber alles.
Nope. The dems in kansas are compiling themselves a real red state record on the environment. That might cause candidates for prez to overlook someone who is so obviously anti-environment. Anti water conservation. Except for low flow shower heads. hehehe

On the healthwave question, I am guessing that in making $14K/year, that you did not have a large savings account to take care of medical or other emergencies.
Health care costs have been running way ahead of inflation:
http://www.kaiseredu.org/topics_im.asp?imID=1&pare...
I would submit, Danny that the majority of U.S. workers making $14K per year DO NOT have access to healthcare. You were lucky that you did and I commend you for not taking government health care when you did not need to.
My question, in your particular case, how was it that you, me, and the rest of our society was hurt by our government's offering of health care to your children? What was the net harm there. Healthwave is managed by a company named Cenpatico. Those folks are incredibly aggressive in managing their resources - and because of that we are not talking about "a gold-plated health insurance" - we instead are talking about the bare necessities. Healthwave allows poor children access to live saving and medically necessary services only. Call me what you like, but it is hard for me to see how this mission is a bad thing.

Kidding. I think "The Inconvenient Truth" opened a lot of eyes; I don't feel like the Kansas government, let alone Federal is going to be ABLE to ignore it for much longer. It opened a lot of eyes and, for better or worse, started stir that is very likely (in my opinion) to snowball.

Dubya, bless your little heart. Do you also believe in Santa Clause and the Easter Bunny? heheheheh. Just kidding.
Like usual, Kansas wont give a rat's ass until it is waaaaaayyyyy too late to make a difference. It's already almost too late, and it is DEFINATELY too late for the Smoky and the upper Ark. As a state, we are already three quarters down to the bottom of the water barrel. Just when do you think the leggies and governor leadership might stop PROMOTING over pumping? Can you say "when donkys fly"?
Exactly WHEN do you think the repukes or the dems in Kansas will do something? When the water dries up or when campaign contributions from the corn growers, Kansas Farm Bureau and Steve Irsik dry up?
Take a guess which will dry up first. The state's water barrel or the campaign contributions that promote ethanol and irrigation uber alles.
Exactly WHICH political leader from EITHER party in this state has the balls or ovaries to step up to this issue? You may include those warming the bench in your search for names.
The last real leader we had in this state was David Adkins. The one before him? John Carlin. And that was a damn long time ago, hehehe, before I even HAD gray hair.
Nope. When you show me someone in state goverment or leadership who has the ability and will to step up to this painful and unpopular issue, give me an email ok?
heheheheh. I'll leave the light on for ya...

DD,
You are right about the savings account. The second job I had, offered insurance for working 30 hrs/wk. I didn't have much. I'm not saying that offering it is bad.. I didn't see harm in that, I think what I am saying is perhaps it still could be more strict. I don't know about how aggressive Cenpatico is regarding their resources, so I can't comment on that. What I do recall reading in their information was that someone making I believe it was $32k or $36k could qualify for it also(with I think 3 children). I think that goes a bit beyond need, but I could be wrong, I am only expecting my second, so guess we'll see if my tune changes later.
I agree, bare necessities is all that is needed. I suppose using it wouldn't have been that bad, however, I didn't think it was necessary. Was that an easy decision? Not in the least. However, I decided that I had insurance that covered my daughter and there wasn't a need to further reduce the chances of someone worse off than myself needing that.
Granted I make more now and only work one job, but that 14k/yr was as recent as last year when I finally finished with school. Was it easy? No, would I have liked more help, of course, but I didn't really need it so I went without somethings for myself as I had one goal in mind, get for myself what I really wanted.
Off topic:
KU is playing SIU I think.
As for the Inconvenient truth, I still have an issue with how we get some of the collected data, and temperature data really only seems to be collected for the past 150 to 200 years or so. I'd like to know more about how environment data was collected/interpreted for events leading to ice ages and other periods of warming. What causes or pieces of data appear to be relevant, etc.
Beyond enacting massive emissions laws, I do think we should protect resources(such as water, and the like).
Topic change:
May I ask if anybody here plays Risk or risk like games? Sorry, I like risk and those style games, and found a cool invite only game Warfish.net that is very similar and thought if others would like an invite, I'd be more than happy to invite.

Just keep studying the issue Danny Boy. I hope you have a good supply of candles and some hand fans to use while you wait for data that suits you.
Remember "perfect" is the enemy of "good". Let us know when you have perfect data. Otherwise, maybe people who care about their children should just go on and ACT on the data we have.
That data, while perhaps not perfect, is good enough to draw a picture that can be understood, apparantly, by anyone who doesnt worship at the reich wing alter.

I heard that Edwards was going to make an announcement today and I was afraid of this news.
The company that manages Kansas' healthwave, Cenpatico, is a private company that does have profit margin motives to hold down costs. My understanding, that I am not supposed to have, is that Cenpatico is trying to get out of the deal with Kansas, because there so few "lives" covered here. So, Kansas would be an example where maybe the private market solution may not work too well.
But, again, I would ask anyone to tell me how not having health coverage for poor children is a good idea. Such an assertion seems untenable on its face to me.
Healthwave was designed for the "working poor" - so, Dave if you lived in KS you might qualify for it. It is coverage that is not a lot, but is much better than nothing.
With welfare reform, there is a growing number of working poor. Healthwave seemed like a good way to transition people to more traditional healthcare plans. But, as Dave points out those traditional plans are kind of sucking right now. When dollars are more important than people in every sense, problems can arise as we are now witnessing.
Welfare reform seemed an easier task to accomplish in the late 1990's in that employment opportunities were greater then. I have been struck by what appears to be a growing support for a single health care payor system in the U.S. There are a lot of anecdotal horror stories about such plans, but I am not sure how representative those stories are. When big corps start getting behind such a solution, it may happen.

Nah, I just want to know more about how some of the data was collected and interpreted. Not wanting 'perfect' data, but if I don't understand how it was collected and interpreted then I can't say the doomsday picture is accurate.
I'm not saying that we as humans aren't responsible, and I do my part as best as I can to help alleviate some of that. I'm just more curious as the science behind it is all, and if I can grasp that and understand a little bit as to why, then I'd be more apt to have the same concept of more needs to be done to solve global warming.
Calling me Danny Boy? Well, I suppose that is all good. *shakes head* My wife calls me that also, and does it just to annoy me.

longhorn, only a blind person could not see this was coming. On deck: the refinancers who did so to tap their equity for reasons such as paying off credit card debt, listening to the siren song of deductible interest, one payment, etc. Many of these folks, to their regret, didn't learn their lesson the first time, and now are back in consumer credit debt "up to their ears" and have the unenviable position of being "upside down" in their homes.
Yes, the lack of discipline hurt many. Many more were in such a hurry to have a "piece of the American Dream" that they ignored the "teaser" portions of the deals. The lenders happily went along, encouraging this. I suspect that there are a whole lot of folks out there who thought the only thing real estate values would do was keep rising at unsustainable rates. BTW, having REO (Real Estate Owned) on a financial institution's statement is NOT a good thing.

Here's a great quote from comedian Eddie Izzard:
In the '30s, Hitler: Czechoslovakia, Poland, France, Second World War... Russian front not a good idea... Hitler never played Risk when he was a kid. Cause, you know, playing Risk, you could never hold on to Asia. That Asian-Eastern European area, you could never hold it, could you? OK, having said that, I LOVE ME SOME EDDIE IZZARD!
I discovered him, believe it or not, in Texas in 1999. I think he is just about the funniest person out there today, with the possible exception of Lewis Black. (Bill Hicks is still the KING of comedy)
Did you see Eddie's marathon a few weeks ago on the BBC? You could see him grow and change over the years. My favorite bits are still the "executive" transvestite and the "Mouse is on the table" in French just makes me laugh until I cry. Not matter HOW many times I hear them.
And yes, I watch The Riches. I would have never picked him or Minnie Driver for those roles, but damn if they arent perfect. I think the Irish part was supposed to cover his occasional slips of dialect. What I saw last week was him using his dialect to appear so veddy veddy uppercrust. The lunch with the law partners was hysterical, and the gun shooting even better.
Most people dont even know where FX is, and I hate watching ANY fux owned channel, but The Riches is on Sunday at 9pm I think. Check your local listings as they say.
And, like you, I always watch Bill, just on replay since I am usually working on Friday nights. :)

Pre, I was in the crowd at the Fieldhouse that night you mentioned when WSU beat KU. It was so exciting! At that time, my youngest daughter was a KU student, my older one a student at WSU. The younger girl and I attended the game together and I think we both rooted for both teams. It was hard to stifle the excitement so cheering was going on no matter who was deserving at that instant. Basketball at its best!
It has been more than 30 years since I played Risk. The board game (with real wooden pieces) is still in the basement storage room. It was fun but that's all I remember. Suppose if we got it out the way to play would come back? Is it like riding a bike?
It's so warm and cloudy and feels a lot like many spring days in Kansas where the weather can turn threatening. Don't want to think about a storm that would take out electricity around 6ish this evening...

Well, good morning y'all! Happy Sweet Sixteen to all you B'Ball fans. Happy Springtime in Kansas. As usual, a few random thoughts........
Why would they allow a power plant to be built in Holcomb if the power is going to go to Texas? The water to will support the project (?) belongs to Kansas, but the benefit will go to another state? I realize that when it comes to science I am no Hawkings, but it seems simple to me. Perhaps we need to resurrect Hickock and Smith.
Risk? I played twice with my son. He kicked my ass. No play no more.
Thanks to CF for submitting an article. Thank you very, very much. Now the rest of you get with the program. (wink)
Good link, VT. I have a feeling that this war is going to lead to more misery as noted. As I posted in my article about the soldier convicted of homicide, the blame lies WAY up the chain of command, but it seems that little or nothing is ever done. So much for that "Party of Personal Responsibility" Republican values position.
It is way too bad about Edwards' wife. I had a feeling that this was coming. That couple has had way too much to deal with in their marriage, but they seem strong and willing to face the issues. God bless them.
As for the mortgage issue, Grrl? The Bushcos will just blame it on the individual, just like they did when they gutted the bankruptcy laws. Do you all know that even ID theft debts cannot be written off with the new law? WTF?
As for the NCAA Tourney? Kansas CANNOT possibly win - too many EXPERTS are now predicting that they will be cutting down the nets. They may as well stay home tonight and watch Obermann. (wink!)
As for the water crisis, I have an answer for the problem. Just explain (talking very slowly) to the Reich Wingers and GW deniers that BEER is made with WATER and that, if there is NO water, there will be NO BEER. That should wake them up.
Hey, I am looking forward to tomorrow. My granddaughter is coming over to spend the nights with Gramps! We are going to cook dinner for Uncle, play a little PS2 (she has her own Dora game) and bake some brownies. (No Toklas versions) Saturday moring we will have breakfast ready when Uncle gets home from work. She is amazed that grandpa can crack eggs with one hand and not get shells in the scrambled eggs!
.... and one last thing.... there is no such thing as overreacting when defending a friend.......

Sorry, Linda, using the KU abbreviation for Bob Davis and Chris Piper, the play-by-play announcer and "color analyst" on the KU network. You find them at 1240 AM or 98.7 FM. My routine is to mute the TV and watch, while listening to "BobnChris" on the radio.

BTW, if you are up for more KU stuff than most, excepting a true believer like me (:-)), you may turn on the "crystal" right now to either of the above stations and listen in (just like I am!).

Man, you have to be kidding. They act like they are playing Bradley or Bucknell. Kansas is down three. Self needs to get Rush and Wright into the game and beat these guys down with speed and strength. So far, they are playing SIU's game.
Jeez, this cannot be happening for the third in the row.

Holy shit. Can Self coach against a team that does not play his game? This is way, way too much deja vu. Send Self to the lockerroom and let the Kansas players play the game.
If Self blows this one, they should fire his ass before he gets to the lockerroom.

Oh, I forgot to mention that the referees tonight were a couple of SONS OF BITCHES. I also forgot to mention that a few of the Salukis were SONS OF BITCHES. I also heard that a few of the security guards were SONS OF BITCHES. Actually, I heard that Bill Self's Dad was a SON OF BITCH.
My question is; why are there so many SONS OF BITCHES showing up?

About what, Linda? You mean the SOB's? I only saw an SOB after the game - at about 8:25 PM.
Actually, I thought that the officiating was very biased towards SIU. They got away with a lot of inside fouls but they were not called. If KU wants to take it home, they are going to have to get past that and play harder.
But I still wonder where all the Sons of Bitches come from......

Yes, I thought the officiating was a little... unbalanced ... You would think the kids would get to decide every game at this level, wouldn't you!? KU came away with the win even tho the Saluki's had some help so all is well.

KU prevailed over a team that were made up of some serious scrappy fighters. They were lucky to get away with a win, if you ask me.
Not being a hawk, I think they will be _real_ lucky to defeat either Pitt or UCLA. Elite 8 and out is my call...

I don't know if there were all that lucky, SD, but they should be very, very thankful at this point. They could have easily lost this game, but it may just be the wake up call that they needed.
The other teams left in the Tourney are not the defensive specialists like SIU. KU may have learned that winning is not a given.
I hope they win it all - but they have to EARN it.

Linda, here's the game I was talking about that was held in New Orleans. We watched it on TV with friends who were huge KU fans.
"The 1980-81 Shockers compiled a 26-7 record and advanced to the final eight before losing to Louisiana State 96-85, in the championship game of the NCAA Midwest Regional in New Orleans.
On the way, directed by Randy Smithson at guard, the Shockers defeated Kansas 66-65, in the “Battle of New Orleans.” The Shockers finished with the second-best record in history, and Smithson was named to the Midwest Region All-Tournament team. During the four-year span from 1980-1984, WSU produced a 92-29 record."
Somewhere I have a t-shirt commemorating that event. We attended the playoff games at Henry Levitt that year and watched Carr and Levingston help bring the Shocks to victory. (I have autographs from all the team members on a bumper sticker, signed at Mid-Continent when they returned after losing in N'awlins.)
I also met X (Xavier McDaniel) in Clearwater one summer, when he played on a men's softball team. I had a scrapook of clippings from all the WSU games, drove home 15 miles, grabbed the clipping with his picture, drove back to Clearwater and got him to autograph it. My head barely came up to his waistband. LOL By the way, he was a lousy softball player. ;)

I'm trying to watch the damned basketball game, and every few minutes we have a gawldern 3 minute commercial break.
Now correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that the KU strategy has always been to run the damned court till the opponents can't keep up. You can't shoot when yer too busy suckin' wind. Right?
That's why they have always been such a great 2nd half team. Well, with TV, the whole strategy is impossible.
Now with all these damned "TV time-outs", kinda' changes the whole nature of the game, don't it?
There's basically two completely different basketball games, one with TV, one without.
If we were to see two 20 minute halfs, (like it oughta be) nobody in the country would be close to beating KU.
THAT'S WHAT MAKES ME SICK!

Okay, the one minute family soap.
The dog (Addie) is sheddin' like a sumbitch.
The older daughter moved her ol' man out, but they'll patch it up.
The younger daughter has been on spring break,
but had to spend it taking care of her Ma.
The wife needs knee surgery,
but is trying to put it off for some time.
Mom is getting forgetful,
and couldn't quit gossiping to save her soul.
Dad made a trip to the VA in Wichita yesterday,
and is surprisingly healthy for an old guy with a broken neck. I'm pretty sure he's disgusted about the rosy prognosis.
Me, I'm working 6am to 5pm, 6 days a week.
Sundays and Wdnesday nights, I sit with Pa so that Ma can go to church, shop, and whatever else she needs to do.
My 30 year old car is broke down, I could use a couple of pairs of new shoes and jeans, and I think we've got a mouse in our house.
Life IS grand huh?

Tracy, goddam, you can make me laugh more than ANY other poster. And you know what they say, it isnt funny if it isnt true. It's the truth of what you say and how you say it that is funny.
I do know from sheddin' dogs to mouse in the house! I also know the creeping burden of aging parents, much less the rewards and frustrations of being with an incapacitated parent. Ya gotta laugh or else you will cry, but all the laughs are sorta gallows humor...
My Mom was REALLY healthy too before she had her stroke. One day she was fine and on a trip with relatives, the next day? She almost died and then lived with the use of one hand and three fingers of that hand only! She couldnt speak, and the worst part? Her mind was fine.
SO... all that about Mom is to say I know what ya mean when you say "disgusted with the rosy prognosis".
Aint it funny how after a lifetime of good health and taking good care of herself, that very health becomes an agent of suffering?
Sorry. At the risk of being too morose and maudlin for a day like this, there are more laughs to be had in a nursing home than one might imagine :) The nursing home resident dog was a laugh a minute, and, bless their hearts, the staff, if you can make friends with them before they turnover for a better job, have their own brand of gallows humor.
And you should have seen the nursing home dog, a homely rescued cur with a sweet personality, when my oh so beautiful blond and blue eyed charming Concha dog came to visit Mom. Everyone, staff and residents, just ADORED Conch, and it made the nursing home dog so mad and so jealous it was really funny.
One of the residents would come over to pet Concha, and the N.H. dog would rush over, bark, and then wrap herself around the legs of the resident. heheheh. It was like she was saying "hey! These are MY old people! Beat it kid!" heheheheh.
Concha would just look at the dog like she was out of her mind, then she'd bat her eyelashes and continue flirting with whomever was petting her at the time. But Concha was a sneaky and devious Husky. She was really just trolling for treats. She thought old folks ROCKED 'cause they dropped a lot of food on the floor...
And Concha loved my Mom! That was her Freda! And Mom loved her and Beesley, Eran's dog.
Well. Who'd a thunk I'd take a trip down nursing home memory lane today? I do remember the "good" times over the three years she was there. Believe it or not, there were good times. Tracy, I know you know what I mean.
And I miss her every day since she died. Life goes on. But I'd be a liar if I didnt say that living here would be a lot nicer if I was still young, Dad was still tinkering in the Quonset shed, and Mom was still frying chicken in the kitchen.

Morning, all; that was a bit close last night; anyone else recall a similar game (as to closeness and some luck) in the 1988 run? Can't recall the team KU beat, but there was a misssed shot at the end that Manning rebounded to preserve the victory.
Re: next game; UCLA will prove a worthy opponent, no doubt; from a matchup perspective, I would have preferred Pitt to have won. However, the UCLA defense isn't the same type and kind practiced by SIU (that's good!), and I feel KU will have a chance to win more easily (not saying they will win, but that if they do, it will have been more easy).
TGIF and all that!

Can't tell you how much it means to read the goings-on and news as interpreted by my very most favorite bloggers. You guys really can turn a sows ears into a silk purse!
You know most of my sons current funding comes from The Stowers Institute in KC, MO. Their hope is to bring him back to KC when all this broohawhaw settles down and rational people realize throwing something away is destroying it without hope of bringing help for anyone. But he is always busy keeping the revenue lines open because it's unlikely the folks here in the great plains states will put aside their prejudices within the next century. Federal funding for embryonic stem cell research will happen before Kansas comes out of the dark ages. It's unlikely he will move back nearer to home. His work is very important so he will stay where it can be done without being called a criminal!
Always keep in mind there are great strides being made, if our scientists could really pursue their work (without worry of funding) they would come more quickly, but they will come. When they do all the cures, treatments and advantages will be available to everyone, including all those who caused the slow downs.
VT, doesn't UCLA play a game more similar to KUs fast pace? If so, I think KU has a good chance because they play their game very well. They struggle trying to play someone else's game as we saw last night.
We are on a satellite dish here at our house and last night during halftime the rain was sooo hard we lost the satellite signal. Just as I was starting to panic it came back. We didn’t miss anything but half time.
Tracy, that shedding is a pain. My two cats are getting rid of their winter coats and none to careful where they leave them! My hubby is a very hairy man -- from the eyebrows down. He is follicly challenged above the eyebrows only. I think I'm the only person who needs to sweep the bed before making it, and we're not going to talk about that bathroom floor. You'd think someone who misses the hair on top of his head so much would hang onto what he has other places!

LH,
In regards to stem cell research, some of us are only against embryonic stem cell research. However, that is because some of hold that life begins at the moment of conception, not at the moment a child is born.
I'm all for adult stem cell research and umbilical cord stem cell research. However, embryonic stem cell research is destroying a human life for only the possibility of maybe saving another(or several others) life. Especially when umbilical cord stem cells, and to a lesser extent adult stem cells, appear to hold as much promise without having to destroy another beings life.
This is one of those issues I'm very conservative on. I'll go into it a little later if you like. I'm no fool in believing that it can be stopped easily without doing other things first.

Scientists use the so-called left-over embryos at fertility clinics for their embryonic stem-cell research. These blastocysts WILL BE THROWN AWAY if not used for research. Why is that better in your opinion? If that is a life, does that mean it can be ended one way (thrown in the trash) but not another (used in research)? You're OK with throwing it away?

Here's last spring's announcement of Chad's appointment as a Stowers Researcher. His work at Harvard and Mass General Hospital is very exciting. I visited his new lab last fall. I'm one proud Mom. And, he better hurry with some of those tratments cause I'm not getting healthier or younger.

Linda, congrats! Indeed you must be proud. Think of the good work he is doing so that folks like Tracy's Dad and my Mom could have a better life. Now THAT is something to be proud of. Heheheh. No shit about good scientists not returning to this state, or anywhere in the Midwest. Same with many talented and educated gay people. What self respecting queer, without a farm, would want to live here in the middle of such hate and bigotry? Dont think for a moment the wingnuts wouldnt beat up on those research scientists too.
And I think it is highly unfair that the folks who most oppose stem cell research will eventually benefit from the work done by others. Too bad we cant say "no wingnuts allowed" to access treatments discovered and developed by stem cell research.
But then, they do tend to be parasites, no? We make progress IN SPITE of them, and they still get the benefits. Tell me AGAIN that there is a god? heheheh Jesus WEPT!

I didn't mean to cut off discussion. Usually I stay out of these types of talks because I'm too passionate and it is too controversial. One of those topics most people have made up their mind about and always for very good reasons. This is to me what water is to longhorn (and what water should be to ALL of us as I have learned from her!). So, NEVER will I throw and heavy objects at anyone. I know it's a subject full of emotions and opinions that come from more than just facts. I put great value in moral convictions so never will find fault when someone has chosen a conviction. Every person is valuable. My position is that left-over blastocyst should be donated for the common good. I respect that there are other positions.
I promise to stay quiet!

I dont think you cut off discussion Linda. Most of us here agree with you and sol, er Danny, probably doesnt want to take on someone with your knowledge.
Wanna know what is on the breakfast menu here? heheheh

Breakfast too!? If those in your household aren't thankful enough you let me know and I'll remind them!
I'm sorry you haven't had more than just enough rain to mess up working outside. Wichita has had two good rains this week and more is on the way. It's the way spring should be. Didn't we skip spring rains for the last few years? Seasons have been messed up enough I've lost track of what was. I think this is what the scientists call "weather events" when discussing Global Climate Change. Another subject fraught with controversy, huh!?
My Mom is a Lady Bear fan -- Southwest Missouri State ladies team -- and was in her heyday when Stiles was there, but has watched and rooted during the good and not so good years.

Linda,
I'll agree to disagree with you on this, and this is primarily because like you said, many of us had made up our mind. I'm not the 'expert' that your son is, but I do read several articles on it by those who are experts also. So I am fairly well informed about it yes. One of the projects I don't my computers time to(and improving) is Folding@Home project for finding cures to many diseases through protein folding.
Congrats to your son, from the sounds of it, it looks at though eventually he won't have to use embryos. And I'll really do hope that pans out. Yes, I went and read both of the articles you provided Linda which why the late reply.
LH,
I back a different set of experts, and provided two articles that seemed to support other stem cell research than embryonic stem cell research.

Hee hee Linda. While those near and dear to me do appreciate my culinary talents, I present other uh, "challenges" that make them perhaps not so thankful....
Steak and eggs and fried potatos and toast today. Too drizzly to work outside. I'm having dinner with friends tonight and NOT at the restaurant. My contribution? Three fresh baggettes (sp?) and shrimp cooked in butter, olive oil, LOTS of fresh garlic, basil, oregano, sea salt and fresh ground black pepper.
Heheheh. And you wonder why I need a grease trap on my heart?

ok, third times the charm right? I've tried to add to this thread a couple times already this morning and hit the 'add' button and it mystappears (it disappears and it's a mystery where it went).
On the stem cell research. I wish it was easier to donate the afterbirth that they use for research. I told my OB that I wanted to donate after the delivery and she said to tell them at the hospital. So when we went in we told them and they said we had to set it up previously with the doctor. So even though we (hubby and I) really really REALLY wanted to we couldn't. I later learned that if I had a long labor they could have probably rushed the paperwork but since I pop those babies out in less than 6 hours (from water breaking to actual delivery) it wasn't long enough.

Julie,
My wife and I donate also. Our OB has us fill out the paperwork before hand so this way it is on file at the hospital in advance.
