To answer the initial question, all in all, fairly good; Saturday evening's disappointment was tempered by the safe and early arrival of the younger daughter at the airport, in apparent good health and good spirits. Sunday was spent visiting with my mother and three siblings in McPherson, the younger in tow along with my wife. Good conversation, good food; some quality time. A stop at Dillon's at Central and Rock about 8:30 last night elicited the comment from the younger that while she understood that things change, it seemed to her that there should be some certainty in life, namely that she could walk into that store and be able to find what she wanted without searching; not the current case, to be sure.

I picked up this rant at DU. I thought it was very good, and thought some here might enjoy it. Long, but worth the read for those with some attention span left.
"While yesterday I focused on the fact that the Republican Party is reeling, today - thanks to the latest outburst from Glenn Beck - I'd like to remind everyone of something equally important: This is who they are. The face of Beck, Ann Coulter, George Allen and so many other right-wing bigots, misogynists and low-down assholes is the face of the Republican Party. The face and, to be sure, the heart and soul.
Take a good look, America, because the smiling faces you see on the right belie a cold, dark interior far more accurate than outward appearances. And remember what you see, because obscuring the truth about themselves is the only thing keeping the Republican Party from being marginalized to permanent minority status at the far fringes of society.
When Beck calls Hillary Clinton a "stereotypical bitch", he's speaking for the party.
When Coulter calls John Edwards a "faggot", she's speaking for the party.
When Allen calls a man of Indian descent "Macaca", he's speaking for the party.
When Bill Donohue says things like "The gay community has yet to apologize to straight people for all the damage that they have done," he's speaking for the party.
When Bill O'Reilly calls the victims of Hurricane Katrina "drug-addicted" and "thugs", he's speaking for the party.
When Bill Bennett says things like "you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down," he's speaking for the party.
When Pat Robertson calls for Hugo Chavez's assassination, he's speaking for the party.
When Brit Hume's first thoughts after the London terror attacks was "Hmmm, time to buy," he's speaking for the party.
And when John Gibson wishes those attacks on France, he's speaking for the party.
Get the picture?
Make no mistake, these are the comments of terrible, terrible people. But not just any people. Prominent conservatives. People held in high regard* and who have repeatedly been given a soapbox from which to spout their dangerous, hateful rhetoric. People given the tremendous opportunity to speak both to and for other people.
You and I don't have the same opportunity, nor do we have the same platform. Our words don't appear on cable news, on nationally syndicated radio or in national newspapers. Theirs do.
So the next time a mindless Republican asks a progressive to answer for the words of a seeming nobody, remember that the hate speech you're hearing from the right isn't coming from a corresponding seeming nobody. It's coming from people of prominence.
Not people of character, mind you, but people of prominence. And people whose warped sentiments speak for millions of their fellow travelers.
The truly sad thing about the Becks, Coulters and Allens of the world is that there's a little bit of each of them in every Republican.
Every self-styled conservative caught defending their statements or, at the very least, looking the other way while they spew their bile is forgiving them for poisoning the debate. For cheapening it. For lowering the bar. For appealing to the lowest-common denominator. For pandering to the Republican base's very worst tendencies and beliefs.
This is who they are: Self-styled moral scolds with a bit of an asshole problem.
It's not that they simply never practice what they preach. It's that their preaching is an overt effort to mask their inner depravity. For today's Republicans, the phrase "Don't judge a book by its cover" couldn't be truer. Only now, with the cover rapidly deteriorating, the book itself is there for everyone to see."

Wondering, longhorn, if the "scandal a day" is kinda, sorta like the practice of publicly held corporations throwing every piece of bad financial news into a specific quarter's financial reports; this gives it a run, but next quarter, all is "peachy keen" again... and the financial media just waves the white flag.

After two weeks of waiting, the Wichita police told me this morning that they do not want to file charges on my ID theft situation - too much work. They suggest that I should file it as a civil case. That course, however, only means that I will get a judgment, but never receive any of the money.
I have requested a call from the Financial Crimes chief, so we'll see how this plays out.....
But anyway, my random thoughts.........
After reading this blog this am, I took a visit to WE to see what the fuss w/ Fleet Idiot was all about. Typical Fleetwood - nothing to say, just the moronic babbling of a right wing idiot. Not worth another thought.
Capn', did that moron RepubliKhan-JM ACTUALLY post over here? What did he offer? More of the same?
By the way, Capn', welcome back after your ten day cruise to the Bahamas. Now STFU about your trip!

What do y'all think - will Bush veto the Iraq spending bill? If he does, knowing that there are not the votes to override, what would be the next step.
No spending bill - no funding?

Now, I have a question/request. Could you tell from all the kissin' up I was doing!? How difficult would it be to add a feature whereby we could go back and edit our own posts? I don't see the errors until after I've hit that "Add Comment" button. Once that is done the errors are all-too visible and I would like to fix them. But, on the other hand, I've already made enough errors that everyone is getting used to them so It's no big deal.
But IF I could go back, in the 1:13 post it would read, "life is way TOO serious..."

Of all the brilliant and worthwhile women in the world - politicians, artists, poets, actresses, doctors, business women, lesbian activists/farmer/resturant owners - and all we hear about is some former stripper with tits the size of basketballs?
Who cares?
It is the Anna Nicole Smiths of the world that makes the election of a Hillary Rodham Clinton unlikely.
My second daughter just made the Dean's List for the sixth time - that's news - not Anna Nicole brewing up a deadly chemical cocktail.

When you advocate gay marriage, you have to also consider gay divorce.

Julie,
You and your husband will be in my thoughts and prayers.
All,
So this weekend while in Denver(expensive trip, *mumbles something about oil prices*, but I digress), after paying *mumbles some more* outrageous prices on gas to go see the in-laws for my daughter's 2nd birthday, I decided that I wanted to write up a small little application for tracking gas mileage and oil consumption of my vehicle. This way I don't have to just write it down, but can get averages and graphs of the data to potentially see any problems before they become serious.
I think I may eventually release it to the world, but not this week. Maybe next week, source and all. Except it is for my Windows Mobile PDA, so if there is interest for a Windows version I may write one up for it also(other OS's well I can do that to, but that will take more time).
Oh and regarding spell check, Firefox is pretty nice, it will let you know of spelling errors while you are typing. Generally does a good job(not perfect). Not sure if 1.5.x.x does it, but I know 2.x.x.x does spell checking fine.

I've the Google toolbar installed within my Firefox 1.5xx, and have enabled the spell check function. So, to see if it works, I being the great speller and all, I will now "click" on it and see what happens: ah, it works!! So, Linda and others, Firefox has the function as an "after the fact" issue. I think there might be a way to "turn it on" before starting, but I haven't played with it that much. (BTW, I deliberately misspelled four words in the above, clicked on the check icon, and it identified all of them.)

OK, have experimented further; this function is, indeed, ex post facto; that is, with the Google toolbar installed, once one has entered the text, and before clicking on "Add Comment", one may do a spell check of the post. Capn,
I am a fan of what is maybe the 'true' intent of NCLB. By true, making sure we find ways of moving forward(to keep the bright intellectually stimulated, and finding creative ways to help those not able to keep up, tutoring is a good idea). However, the implementation of NCLB: standardized tests, etc. leads me to believe that if we dumb down America enough we can lower the wages paid out, and hire more foreign workers all the while ensuring that those who have money can have more money.
I think the further problem of the current implementation of NCLB is the fact that there is not incentive to teach things outside of the standard, which further means challenging kids is made more difficult.
So while maybe the idea of the acronym NCLB is great, the implementation is piss poor and leaves much to be desired.
On the money issue though, I'm not against those who have worked their tail ends off and earned what they have made. I'm more against the perceived 'free hand outs' we provide through tax credits for those who already have more money than I'm likely to make through working my entire life. At least I can state I'll be happy with what I'm doing though.
WS,
Congrats to your daughter. Making the deans list is always fun and something to be proud of. My oldest sister made her deans list several times and is doing research in her chosen field of study(granted she is 'done' with school now, only because she has graduated but has to do those silly certifications each year). So just tell her, no matter the age, it will eventually pay off.
VT,
Must be a Firefox 2.0+ thing then, because I have no toolbars and it underlines in a red dashed line immediately where I have spelling errors. No after thought on it at all.

Danny, NCLB's intent is great; it just is poorly executed; I think we both agree on that.
From what I gather from my following the college admissions process, the wide range of grading systems now employed by high schools is forcing more and more weight on the standardized test (ACT, SATI) scores due to inconsistencies among the various "grading" methods used, or no grades at all in some cases. The plethora of admissions essays available on the internet is causing concern as well, given that many institutions were giving the essays greater weight for a period of time.
It all boils down to some way to hold schools accountable; obviously, grades awarded students by teachers is not the best way. In addition to the various forms of grading utilized in the world, there seems to be agreement that some form of grade inflation has struck in the high schools.
The appeal of a standardized test is obvious; unfortunately, the allowance of each state to determine its particular form of assessment, and how to structure the categories of success (or lack thereof) does nothing to address the real issues, notwithstanding what the politicos say.

My only consolation on him spending so time with these types of games is that it will be good prepartion for him surviving real life under the Jenna Bush administration.

Young, handsome, driven, professional football player gives up a multi-million dollar contract to join the Rangers after 9/11 and is killed in action?
And then, much later, it comes out that he was killed by "friendly fire?"
And then it is thought that there may have been some misconduct by his superiors?
It is my contention that Pat Tillman was set up to be in a situation where he could be killed so that the Bush Administration could capitalize on the story for PR purposes.
Remember Jessica Lynch? Do not underestimate the Rovian desire to spin the facts for political purposes.

Several years ago when my daughters attended school in Clearwater, there were major changes made to the grading system. The first was that the grade D was dropped. A C stopped at 51% (I think it was) and anything below that was an F. To me that meant that you were either average or a failure.
But to cover this, they instituted a 'program' of which I don't remember the name. In essence, it gave a student who failed a test the chance to be retaught so to be able to retake and pass the failed test.
Sounds good, doesn't it? It turned out not to be so good though. The top students got lazy, knowing that if they failed a test once, they had a second chance. (There were 15 Salutatorians at graduation that year, which was probably 1/4 of the entire graduation class.) The other problem was that pretty much no one was retaught. The teachers didn't have time to reteach a subject, especially to those too lazy to study the first time, so no one really learned much, except how to procratinate well.
As far as I know, that program fell by the wayside, but the grading scale is still in use. I've always felt rather ambivalent about it, as I see good and bad in it.
The 'take the test twice' thing was all a part of some type of government approved program, IIRC, and was an opt-in kind of thing. Just one more reason why government should stay the hell out of education and let teachers teach.
I'll keep thinking on the name of the program...

I'd be likely to agree with you that biology is certainly going to play an important role in this century. I think I'd tend more to think computing will also have important roles with in it. A good example to look at there is the Folding@Home project, which helps with studying protein folding(and misfolding).
All three of my sisters have studied or are studying biology to go into medicine and/or related research areas. My brother had studied chemistry and biology and is currently in medical school.
So I suppose a background in both computing and biology could be a major plus. Part of me wants to take a few biology courses. Just to further my knowledge about it if for no other reason.

http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html
It is pretty cool, basically when you aren't using your computer and it goes to screensaver, this client runs during that time solving protein problems. Basically looking for cures and solutions to diseases and cancer. <-- very short overview.
They have an FAQ there worth reading, and all of that is linked from the download page directly. If you are interested, I made a team the number is 61188, and when you first run it, all you do is have name and that team number and then we'd all be part of a team trying to help solve diseases and other problems without having to know a thing about what it's doing.
If you have any questions feel free to ask, but I think their website would best answer them.

I tried some homeopathic/herbal stuff a few years ago when it was really bad, and it helped. Wish I could remember what it was I took. I avoid all pharmaceuticals as much as possible. The side effects can kill you, and I don't want to take 2 more meds to combat the bad stuff from the first med. Drug companies just love picking our pockets, only to make us even worse than we were.

Yesterday, Rosie O'Donnell referred to the Iranian - British crisis as "Gulf of Tolkin." Now, I am no fan of O'Donnell, but I have to wonder if there is a grain of truth in there somewhere......
"U.S. launches show of force in Persian Gulf
Aircraft carriers, warplanes feature in maneuvers off the coast of Iran."

Could be? Might be? Oh, no, he didn't?
I certainly have compassion for Stonewall Tony Snow, but I wonder how the right is going to respond in light of their response to Elizabeth Edwards.
As I posted last night, they were all over Katie Couric, but they gave Limbaugh a pass on his "Edwards is jump starting his campaign" comment.
Hypocrisy, thy name is Republican.
Tomorrow morning I am going to embark on a frightening and epic journey - I am going Downtown to both the Police Headquarters and the IRS office. I am planning to begin drinking heavily when and if I return.

wsc, My only advise is to time the drinking correctly. Your plan for after seems the right timing. I'll be thinking good thoughts on your behalf!
Does it seem that if bushco thinks the ship may be in danger of sinking they want to go out with guns blazing? I wonder if they even realize the ship is taking on water? They seem to be expert at looking the other way.

On the IIRC, I think Vaughn was the first person I've ever seen use the abreviation. I have seen it since used by others.
