At this time, I don't think even if Bush "surged" the troop levels upto what was initially proposed by the now fired Army Chief of Staff, it would make any difference as to the outcome in Iraq.

It's starting to look like a race of the lemmings!

Guess who the lemmings are?

Okay, who ordered up this god damned weather? The usual random thoughts.....

When I was in High School, I only got one "E" for a semester and that was in typing class. Who knew that I should have paid attention? Now days, I can type pretty fast and accurately, but I still have to look at the keyboard periodically. Well, actually, I have to look a lot, hence the frequency of typos and misused words.

The question is, am I the only one that wishes he had paid attention way back when?

BTW - I type with my index finders and thumbs - kind of like a crab with pinchers.

This is an article that should make you think...

"Without immigrants, metro areas would shrink

Native-born Americans moving out of cities of all sizes, Census Bureau says"

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17954186/

As I have mentioned, I grew up in Detroit. After the 1967 Riots, my parents moved us to the far northern suburbs. In the late Seventies, the housing prices in the suburbs were booming, while Detroit housing prices were very low. Being a po' boy, I joined a growing number of young white folks buying houses
in Detroit neighborhoods.

I bought a three bedroom house with a fireplace, full basement, formal dining room and a two car garage for $15,000. It had natural woodwork, 1 1/2 baths and a balcony over the backyard.

The same house in the near suburbs would have cost at least $60,000.

Are we seeing a similar situation in our cities today? Is the flight from the cities now similar to the white flight to the suburbs from the early Seventies?

Interesting?

Anyway, I'll be back later.........

On a weather related topic, the younger was home last week for Spring Break; she then returned to school in ME Sunday. I understand from the Weather Channel and other sources that this morning, snow was falling in her area at the rate of 1" per hour; wonder who she blames?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, blame it on the weather, Dub......

I'll have to try that one the next time I f'up. I mostly use the "I was distracted" defense, but sometimes I am forced to go with the Reagan "I do not recall" approach.

I do occasionally use the "I can't, I am getting old" routine, but that is only used when referring to things like moving furniture or carrying heavy objects. There are times in that same regard that I have to trot out the "bad back" rationale.

Sometimes I use the "my head is filled with (useless) trivia" defense, but only relative to my inability to remember what I was looking for, not in regards to what may have happened thirty years ago.....

Before getting back to work (again), heard on the college radio station (linked below) that there's a foot of snow on the ground.

Am providing the link to the site for those who have the right capabilities on their computer and might like to "tune in" to a college radio station as the same were "back in the day". Currently on is "Jazz with Chas", hosted by an emeritus professor of English. Not sure what the rest of the day's schedule will bring, as the web site schedule is not complete, but, like I say, if one wants to listen over the computer to a great example of a college radio station, try it out.

Now, back to the Alternative Minimum Tax....

New record for me (snow in April); old record, April 1, 1970, when an undergrad at KU. Story: after Statistics class, hearing those ahead of us who had turned the corner and could see out, "It's snowing!", and those of us in the rear guard, considering the date, doubted them until confronted with the evidence.

Well well, lookie what my ol' bud Howard D sent to me.

Dear Tracy,

Are you as fed up as I am?

The Democratic majority in the House and Senate stood with the American people. They passed a bill that would fund our troops and begin the process to bring them home.

President Bush's impending veto of the Iraq War supplemental bill is an insult to Congress, to the majority of Americans who voted for change in November, and to the brave men and women who risk their lives every day we remain in Iraq.

One thing is for certain: A Democratic president wouldn't veto that bill.

But that's not all that President Bush is doing. He's defending Alberto Gonzales for firing eight U.S. Attorneys, claiming he has "100 percent confidence in the Attorney General." And he's apologizing for the conditions of Walter Reed Medical Center six weeks after the conditions were exposed -- making promises to "fix the problem" that sound eerily similar to those he made to Hurricane Katrina victims.

The days of a do-nothing Congress are over, but the days of a do-nothing President are still going strong.

Whooo!!! What the heck happened out there? I had to make a quick run to the store and what did my eyes see??? Snow, snow in Kansas in April. Three days after a high of 81, we have snow on the ground. I walked out the door, planning to get a little exercise and walk to the grocery and this white flaky stuff is blowing all around. Being a LSOB, I didn't go make to get the car keys, I just walked anyway.

I guess the snow today makes up for the snow we didn't get during the winter or something like that...

I just noticed that VT posted a note about the snow - you should have warned me earlier, Vaughn.

Two article listed back to back on ESPN's home page:

Huggins to leave KSU for WVU.

Darryl Stingley dies.

One is about a selfish man with no class. The other is about a man that was all about class.

It is pretty easy to figure which man was classy.

WS,

I'm either not into sports enough, or am too young to know... but whoi s Darryl Stingley? Which sport did he play/coach in?

Yes, I know which is with class and which is not. Huggins is without. Now, with that said, the reason why I was interested in seeing this, is Huggins can coach fairly well, and it just makes the Big 12 that much of a better conference. Having gone to KSU for my degrees, I'm always happy to see them do well, however I'll always root for KU basketball. :D So I do hope that KSU can find a good replacement in a short time, and hopefully can salvage some of their recruits also.

Given that, back to installing Xcode on my Mac. This way I can connect to CVS and get my source code checked out on this machine and be able to potentially work from home on a day a week.

Darryl Stingley was a Wide Receiver, 26 years old, playing for the New England Patriots in August of 1978 in a pre-season game. He was running a crossing route over the middle when the pass from Steve Grogan (KSU?) went over his head, Jack Tatum of the Oakland Raiders hit Stingley in mid-air, breaking his neck. Stingley was paralysed before he hit the ground.

Jack Tatum was known as the Assassin. He never apologized or even contacted Stingley after the incident.

Tatum's Head Coach was John Madden. Madden eventually quit coaching in part due to the Tatum/Stingley incident.

Be afraid, very afraid if one of these two Republicans is elected president.

http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2007/04/01/...

Romney is not sure if the president should have the right to arrest any AMERICAN citizen without review. Ghoul-iani says that the president should use that power infrequently.

WHAT THE HELL??????????????

What happened to the Constitution? I know that Bush trampled all over it, but it still exists, right?

I don't care if you are the nasty, most evil son-of-a-bitch on the face of the Earth - no one man should have the right to arbitrarily arrest you without due process.

WS,

Maybe I should re-read the constitution with you, and laws, etc. But I'm thinking I'm with you on this one, I don't recall it saying that Congress or the President had that right/responsibility. I think only law enforcement have the responsibility to arrest someone, and that is only after there is probable cause for it also.

Then the courts get to decide for how long that person will remain "arrested." Ok, I maybe overly simple in that explanation but still.. I think it may suffice in this.

However, maybe we are both wrong? I don't think so though.

Under the current reading of the (Un)Patriot Act, the President can designate anyone as an enemy combatant and they can be held indefinitely, without charge. Jose Padilla was held for 3 1/2 years before being charged.

The judge in his case also is allowing testimony against him that was gained by torturing the witnesses.

Joe Padilla is an American citizen.

Under the terms of the Patriot Act and enemy combatant can be an American.

In others words, Bush can designate ANYONE as an enemy combatant and they can be arrested and held without charge.......

Anyone, including you and me.

The article that you linked to was pretty scarey, WS, but what's even MORE frightening is that so many Americans are oblivious to how much unbridled power this administration has seized for itself, while other Americans think it's a dandy form of government. I'd hate to think that in the not-too-distant future we'd have to live in fear for voicing our opinions in AmeriKa.

Of equal concern is the fact that once a government gets these powers, for whatever reason, there is an inherent reluctance to cede them back to the people!

That is more than 1 step towards "Big Brother".

Not necessarily oblivious, but not necessarily informed either. I keep forgetting how much the Patriot Act unbalanced the Court, Congress, President powers.

Some will take the "I have nothing to hide" approach and there is a tiny bit of validity on the surface with that philosophy. It is only when you look deeper that it becomes unsettling. Just think about it:

Anyone.

So if LBJ declared Eugene McCarthy a EC? Clinton had declared Kenneth Starr a EC? Bush decided Barack Obama was an EC?

There is nothing in the Patriot Act that would stop a president from making those moves. As the law is written, NO ONE would even have to be notified.

No lawyers. No press releases. No media.

Imagine if President Clinton had Starr "disappeared" the Republicans would have gone nuts.

Imagine if President Obama had Sean O'Limbaugh "disappeared."

I really only followed the Patriot Act in so far as how it related to computing technologies for the most part(hey bane of the CS major part of me), and then how that ended up tying into the DMCA.

I'll admit wasn't as well informed as I should have been about the Patriot Act. I'll need to go read it myself, so I may be busy over the next few days.

As far as the song lyrics above...has there EVER been a time in mankind's history that there hasn't been war? I mean it must be the nature of the beast, a survival instinct that we've evolved with. Only now we're at war more than ever...I think it's time to bring back the draft, this time with everyone having the equal chance of serving..no differments or anything. When the sacrifice is shared, we would put much more thought into getting involved with other governments. I KNOW we wouldn't be in Iraq if every family in this country had the same chance of losing a kid, husband, brother, sister, father, or mother. How many politicians have a kid in Iraq? War will only be used as a last resort if it's painful for everyone.

Mary, I agree with you on the draft, the history of mankind and wars, etc. I personally believe there should be a four year mandatory service requirement placed on everyone, a condition precedent to attendance at college (including the service academies) or other post-high school activities; no deferments. No one would be able to evade this by joining the reserves, National Guard; again, the four years would be a mandatory condition precedent.

I don't want to totally go off on this; anticipating the "what abouts", a crude example; what about those with physical disabilities who are confined to wheel chairs, e.g.? If they can use a computer, whether by use of their hands, a pencil in their mouth, by eye scanning, whatever; they can also serve a function. One small (numerically) exception to universal service: for those unfortunate individuals who are so mentally/physically disabled that they cannot, in fact, be anywhere but in a care facility or at home being cared for by their families, friends, etc.

Why four years, someone might ask? Given the increased training requirements, the four year period is needed to better amortize the costs thereof over time.

BTW, I'm not advocating four years of military service for everyone; but at a minimum, those physically and mentally able would be required to participate in a military basic training at the minimum, with those best qualified then required to complete the four years in the military; others to do governmental work of a public service nature.

Just a few rough thoughts on a subject that I've been thinking on for some 30+ years.

I didn't get to go to the dog show today.

I called my youngest granddaughter, Madeline, who is nine years old. She was wallowing in a puddle of pity because her Mom said she was grounded to her room until it was clean. Furthermore, anything still on the floor tomorrow would be thrown away so she could clean it or Mom would clean it in her own special way. This threat coming from the female who once lived in my home and I thought the carpet in her bedroom was multi-colored like her clothes. It really is true what goes around comes around!

So I asked Madeline's Mom if I could come help clean the room. Friends, I don't want to go into details of this adventure. We didn't clean her closet, her dresser drawers, two of the bookshelves and it still took FOUR hours! We filled two large trash bags with TRASH and another with things to donate. We not only uncovered the carpet we both vacuumed and cleaned it! The room looks so nice, smells so nice.

We might go to the dog show tomorrow. I had promised a family ham dinner but maybe we'll work in some time to go out to see the dogs too. I think Madeline's Mom might be willing to do several dishes for the dinner. Shoot, she might be grateful enough I could take over the ham and she would make the dinner!
