OK, I will have the opportunity to work on the Wichita Voice layout today. Hopefully we can get the pages figured out so the blog aggregate (where all of the authors post) comes up first and not the page that says "Sorry, there are no blog entries".
For now, if you are more comfortable, you can get directly to the old site by clicking: http://dubya.instantspot.com
Cheers!

I see that McCain is still stating that things are getting better in Iraq, and I don't think anyone would want that to be untrue, given the enormous amounts of blood, misery and dollars we have spent there.
It seems to me if that is true, Bushco would be falling all over themselves to publicize that information in an attempt to justify their actions there, I know I would. Unless I'm in the wrong place, I don't recall seeing that publicity.
The only conclusion I can some to is either the conditions "on the ground" are too dangerious to risk covering these improvements, or the "progress" is too minimal to warrant publicity. Their actions do not seem to justify the conclusion that things are getting that much better.
I hope I'm wrong, but I think that Truth was the first victim in this war.

I want all to know that I anticipated a continuation of the frigid conditions, and dressed accordingly; now, only the fingers are a bit chilled. The good people working on the renovation are doing their best to get things done and completed; of course, due to the vagaries of the Kansas weather, when completed, it will be air conditioning time!
Now, back to work.

McCain may have a point, all things considered. How the hell could they be getting any worse?
Changing the subject, has anyone paid any attention to the flap involving Don Imus and the women's basketball team from Rutgers? Perhaps, "eight tattooed nappy headed ho's" was and unfortunate choice of words, even in jest. But (a), "if it looks like a duck, and it walks like a duck, and it quacks like a duck ....?", and (b) it is far less offensive than the seemingly daily racial slurs and utterances we are subjected to from Imus' two main detractors, "da Reverens Sharpton and Jackson". And that gutless MSNBC and CBS Radio are bowing to so-called "political correctness" is despicable. They will 1000's of white viewers and listeners for both blacks they gain from their cowardly actions. And they should.

Nathan: If, in fact, it had been any of the four you mentioned, I'm sure you are right ... because it would not have been said in jest and in the context of a satirical presentation, like Imus in the Morning.
Did you see O'Reilly vs. Geraldo one night last week? Apparently this thrice prior convicted illegal alien (2 DUI's and 1 Public Intox) had an accident while drunk, killing two teenage girls in New Hampshire, I think. O'Reilly was arguing that it was not because he was a drunken driver that shouldn't have been behind the wheel of a motor vehicle ... that it was because he was an illegal alien. I could only sit there, mouth agape, trying to figure out just what the hell was I missing here, friend?
Imus' honest apology and appearing on Sharpton's radio show, after inviting Sharpton to be on his show and Sharpton's out-of-hand refusal, is more than enough. Sharpton's blather this morning kept going on and on about forgiveness by himself, Jackson, the Rutger's girls, and the black community. I recall something about "Forgiveness is mine, sayeth the Lord...". Have Sharpton, et al, elevated their phony self-importance another step? Guess I missed that, too.

Here we have the prefect example of how liberals are when it comes to racist comments.
When a Conservative says something and apologizes it doesn't matter because he obviously meant it.
When IMUS or someone else says something and apologizes he really never meant what he said, it was just in jest...

I heard the exchange on an audio replay and if I am not mistaken the point was that he was trying to make was since the guy was here illegally and had already been in custody previously, he had no business even being in that situation in the first place if people had been doing their jobs all along. I think the general statement was that if we were not failing when it comes to protecting our borders, he may have in fact been drunk behind the wheel somewhere, but it would not have been on our roads!

RM, welcome back - you've been gone awhile - we've missed your POV. I hope all has been well with you and yours.....
Regarding Imus - I cannot imagine what would prompt anyone to refer to a Women's college B'Ball as nappy headed ho's and jigaboo's. The later label was applied by Imus' producer.
Today, we whine about the lack of values of young people - rappers, spoiled athletes, druggies, etc, yet these young women dedicated themselves as a team and came within a game of winning the National Championship.
Imus and company should have been applauding their tremendous accomplishment instead of insulting them.
While I am all about equal rights for everyone, Sharpton and Jackson, in my opinion, do more to harm to their cause then any good that they might do. Race relations are difficult. We live in a polarized society. Unfortunately, Jackson and Sharpton seem to be more about themselves than they are about the issues.
What to do about Imus? He's an idiot. I cannot imagine that he really thought that right thinking people would think that calling a wonderful group of young ladies "nappy headed ho's" would be funny.
Fire him and let him join Howard Stern on Satellite Radio. They share the same lack of class.
Again, welcome back, my friend.

Nathan: I don't really understand what you're driving at -- my fault, certainly not yours. My point was that the aforementioned conservative examples you pointed out hold themselves out to be serious political analysts. I don't think Imus holds himself out to be anything but what he is ... satirical, and certainly not to be taken at all seriously about anything. And, anyone who knows me (from here, elsewhere or in the real world) can assure you I am not a liberal, by anyone's stretch of the imagination.
Dave: Yep, they both ended up ranting and raving like idiots! And, I recognize that IF we had been doing the job at the borders, perhaps the man in question would not have been on that New Hampshire highway at that moment in time. But, having said and accepted that, if the man had been appropriately dealt with during the legal system on, at least, three other separate occasions, perhaps he would not have been there either. The tragedies compound in this story this story and are heartbreaking. But, in the immortal words of Don Merideth, "If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, it would be Christmas everyday". Sometimes, s**t happens!!! As a fully qualified victim of a DUI (drug) semi driver, I get to make that statement without hesitation.
WSC: Thanks. I've missed ya'll, too. I've been out of town, busy, playing "hurry up and wait" -- you know the drill. :) I totally agree that Sharpton and Jackson are quite adept at playing Russian Roulette with other peoples' heads. I don't think Imus should be fired ... actually, he doesn't even like being televised, but it is a significant tool for raising money for the ranch for kids with cancer and their families. The girls from Rutgers should accept his apologies, acknowledge his good works, and show themselves to be the classy ladies I'm sure that they are. As I'm sure you know, you don't just stroll into Rutgers, announce you're 6'7, black, and can toss around a basketball in "da' hood", and have everyone bowing at your feet.
This is neither important nor relevant to the issue at hand, but I've known Don, Kinky, and that whole "old Texas crowd" personally for almost 40 years, and Don has been a lot of things -- alcoholic, drug addict, obnoxious, grandiose, just to name a few -- but one thing he is not, nor ever has been, is a racist. My friend, he's no Howard Stern. Once more, thanks for the welcome back. Actually, I've been keeping track of some of what's been going on while I was gone through Vaughn, but between April 17th looming like Medusa on the horizon, and his laboring in an igloo, I'm glad I'm back, at least, for a few days. :)

Anyway, I was able to set up a new account on Outlook and even sent an email from my main account on OE to the new one. (Yes, Danny, I do know how to set up accounts. Amazing, isn't it? LOL In fact, I have helped my kids set up theirs. What's a mother for, if not that? >grin<)

RM,
No problem. My point is that it shouldn't matter whether or not you are in satire or serious political commentation.
A racist remark is a racist remark.
Lets look at Tom Delay. He is not a Racist. Nothing he has done in his life has pointed to some underlying racist attitude.
But when he said what he did about Strom Thurmond being President he was attacked as saying the most outrageous racist thing.
It didn't matter his intent, it didn't matter that he apologized. He was burnt at the stake by the left.
So, my point is that here you have IMUS, regardless of why he said it, he said it and people are making excuses for it.
If it had been anyone else on the Conservative side they would have been burnt at the stake by now.

Thanks, Pre, yes -- because of some local holiday in Washington, D.C. that is the 16th, it was, as I grasp it, originally set up as the 16th for everybody except D.C., and then they were good to the 17th -- anyway, while it probably cost a $1 or $2 million to change all of the paperwork, it was decided to make everybody the 17th. What the hell, it's just (our) money, right? :)
WSC, I'll can ask is, yes, exactly, "What the hell was Don thinking?" My only answer is, more times than I care to recall in 6+ decades, "How many times, in laughter, caught up in the moment, with my mind on something else primarily, etc., etc., etc., and a million other excuses, have I said something WITHOUT thinking?" I recall something else from many years ago..."Judge not, lest ye be judged...". From time to time, quite occasionally, I have had those moments that were positive. Those I refer to as "epiphanies". The rest of them (at least 99%) I can only refer to as, "What the HELL was I thinking?" Or as my younger daughter would say, "Well, duh....?????" Damned good analysis, buddy!

He was at an event in honor of Strom and he never said anything about the segregationist platform. He merely said the comment about us being better if he were President.
See?
This is a perfect example of what I am talking about. It was the left that threw that about his platform in there and poor old Trent Lott never meant that.

Not too hard to miss the point.
Thurmond's entire Dixiecrat position was based on Segregation. That is why he left the Democratic Party. The ENTIRE reason that he ran on an independent ticket was because the Democratic Party did NOT support segregation.
To say that "we would have been better off" is to support the very premise of the Thurmond campaign - segregation.

Would anyone watching that show, for anything except a damned good laugh, even bother to watch? Do I watch Don in the morning, if I wake up that early? You bet I do. I laugh my ass off sometimes, just as I have many times on the phone, over a bottle of Stoli, face to face, etc.? Hell, yes! Do I take virtually anything he says seriously? Hell, no!
It was an unfortunate remark, perhaps racist, sexist, you name it! I agree. If the tables were reversed, would the "conservative media" be all over his ass? Hell, yes. What we have today is the PC police. It doesn't matter that someone lives their life without being a racist that they are not racist or that they have never had a history of saying racist things.
When they mess up one time they are burnt at the stake.
I think it is a sham that Treny Lott went through what he did over that comment. The man was far from attending KKK meetings, yet he was treated as if he had just tied up a black girl to his truck and drug her down the dirt road and hung her over one stupid comment.
I don't care if you are liberal or conservative or moderate. Simply saying something dumb once or twice in your life doesn't make you anything other than someone who said something dumb once or twice in your life.
Fine the guy, censure him for a week, suspend him, or whatever little slap on the wrist you think is best and then move on.
When IMUS starts burning crosses on peoples lawns and wearing white pointy hats then we can start getting all upset.

The only plank in Strom Thurmond's 1948 presidential campaign was segregation.
That was it.
If you want to "celebrate" his political career - go right ahead - just deal with the consequences.
Trent Lott did not lose his primary job - his own party, including Bush, forced him to step down from his position as (then) Majority Leader.
And, just out of curiosity, why did Lott vote against the Senate condemnation of lynching?
And, what would the CONSERVATIVES said if Don Imus had called Condi Rice a nappy headed ho?
Let's not play games - this is a left and right thing for some people - not a matter of fairness.

For those of you who didn't create a blog of your own upon signing up to post here, did you just fill in the first 3 blanks (user name, password, & email) and leave the rest blank?
I know, I know. I'm a real pain. Just humor me a little longer.

Getting close to finishing that book I mentioned. I purchased it with a gift card that I got for my birthday, so the postage is not a big deal. Give to someone else when you're done. That will be your only obligation to me.
Different Subject: Been practicing the unplugged version of Layla - that is one beautiful song.

Actually,
My father and I ran into JR at the dog show this weekend.
I don't remember which day exactly, but we talked briefly about the dog he used to have and how he was there to check out the breed and to see any old people he might know.
He thanked me for my service and welcomed me home.
He did say he missed posting and I don't remember what he said about the situation on getting his web TV fixed.
He and I both laughed about how it sucks to read the posts here and not be able to post so we just wouldn't.
Thought I would share.

Good day, all; posting from the igloo, which is beginning to melt a bit...
The following is for those parents and grandparents who have high school age descendants that might (should) be looking at college attendance, if appropriate.
For years, colleges and universities have promoted themselves in a variety of ways; the "view book" is a common way this is done. With the advances in the internet, the view book has become supplemented by the official college web site. Now, the next step in the process; a student produced web page where prospective students may obtain information in a less formal form from actual students attending the school. Not all colleges and universities have these, but it seems the number of schools with such sties is growing.
Now, shameless plug for the younger time: Colby College has recently begun such a site, www.insidecolby.com at which a student looking for information may, among other things, actually ask a current student a question. The younger, unbeknownst to her parents, is one of the Colby students of whom questions may be asked!
I'm passing this along so you may be informed of the existence of these sites, and to show the offspring/descendants just how "with it" you are; thus, when student says something along the lines of I'd like to know more about college X, but I don't know how to do it, you, (trumpets; strewn rose petals) the knowledgeable one, say, why not go to www.schoolx.edu and look at their web page; and, while there, why don't you see if there's a link to a student thing where you can get a current student's insight, and maybe ask them a question?
See how easy that is? The interested party is able to obtain a bit of information without the cumbersome "please add me to your mailing list" signup with Admissions, thereby saving trees and postage while obtaining information which might cause them to become more interested or which might indicate that this really isn't a place to spend four years post-high school.
I hope this is of some assistance to those who are in the position identified above.

This is an email I got from J R:
Hey Steven!
I am here at my Mom's for a few. I was surprised to find this from you.
Hmm where to start?
Well, my webtv keyboard failed completely shortly after my last contact with you. The LAST thing I saw was the nice folks on Wichita voice wanting to help me out. Also, Mike wrote to me. He was sorry and had misunderstood about what you and I were emailing about. That was about a week ago I guess.
I didn't get Mike's email addy before the web died.
Well, here is where I am at. I am so grateful for the offer of help. But I had no idea computers had got so inexpensive these days. I'd not shopped computers for about 8 years. Too, they can do so much more and for cheaper now. SO I am not so hard up as I figured. I thought I was gonna need a thousand dollars!
I think the best place to start is with whatever it is that Mike has and go from there. Anything he would have would be upgradeable probably anyways. And as I found out in my little bit of browsing, I know so little about computers anyways. Now where I could REALLY use help is in finding a good isp for the computer. If you or any of the other folks know of a good inexpensive isp or high speed isp I could use the advice.
Feel free to share this email and tell everyone that I am well and very thankful to have such good friends. Did Hank tell you guys that I saw him at the dog show? Is there any news about meetups or whatever? For now, write me at this email.
Oh and don't worry. I'll be back causing my usual trouble soon enough.
Talk to you soon,
*****
I use AT&T "medium" high speed dsl and have been happy with it. I think I remember Pre- being unhappy with it, but can't recall why that was. Anybody have any other advice on a internet provider?

DD, the AT&T thing is more personal for me than anything else and related to their long distance services. Basically, they lied to me twice and cost me. My mom did use SBC's DSL for a while, and it was a mess for her, but that could be that she is utterly clueless when it comes to anything beyond the 1950's. Okay, maybe the 1960's. *grin*
What about NetZero? Of course THAT requires a phone line, I'm sure, which brings its own set of problems.
Are the only high-speed choices Cox or AT&T?

Likely your current ISP will work with your computer. Just a matter of setting up the computer properly to use it.
As for high-speed choices, the ones I know of:
AT&T, Cox, and Satellite(thought not sure who locally provides that).
Advantages of AT&T and Cox are the same as satellite plus lower lag(if you decide there is a game or two online you want to play). Satellite has the disadvantage of lag(but not for basic browsing purposes) in regards to gaming and that has more to do with distance to and from the satellite.
Dialup I used to use MSN and never once complained. Though, I hear that Netzero is a good choice also. One of my friends used to use PeoplePC, so might be another option also.

What is the business with their name in large letters atop a tall building downtown -- easily seen from Kellogg? They have high-speed internet service. I called a few years ago and they wouldn't do business unless I gave them my social security number so OF COURSE they didn't get my account.
That was back when I thought I had a chance in hell of protecting my identity. Since that time I have just let it all hang out. Everyone can find me (I'm listed in the book!) and many can find out more than I want them to know. ;)
I use SBC and have no problems. The phone lines in my neighborhodd are buried and we don't have interruptions of service. In order to get the best price you have to sign a contract and the longer term you allow, the better the price. Ends up with a two-year contract you pay approx. $20/month and get one month free. BE FOREWARNED! If you break the contract the penalty can be expensive.
I can hardly wait to have J R back! Good news!

Yes, Ryan, extremely disturbing. I've had an inkling that this is occurring through conversations with various school personnel over the last year or so, and thus am glad something is being considered/done, depending upon how one reads the story and which entity is involved, to address this.
Perhaps more disturbing (if anything can be) is the part concerning "second generation" prostitution, which calls into question many, many things, including but not limited to the apparent failure of our educational system; the criminal justice system; and other aspects of our social institutions.

I wouldn't find it 'surprising' necessarily. However, I don't have alot to say regarding it either other than the obvious that it seems sad. It just seems this trend is growing, and well I'm glad to see something proactive being sought to address it.
It is one of the reasons why I want to work in law enforcement, to stop crimes like this against children(and people in general). Just don't want to do it at the local level.

Looks like the preliminary discussion longhorn and I began a while back about the use of RNC servers for "official" email is coming to the forefront as this grinds on.

I can't remember where I read it or the exact details so I'm winging this one. At the White House when the official Easter egg hunt was being held in inclement weather, Laura sat inside in a nook reading a book out loud. It was about a duck that left the farm and went to the big city to be president. But after awhile he found out it was too hard so he went back to the farm.
Did anyone else read this and would be able to fill in the blanks I don't remember? Like the name of the book?

The morale of the story is if you change parties correctly, anything is possible! If not, you're still a loser duck!

I wonder if the current state of "politics" is a direct effect of the "Permanent Republican Majority" desires of Mr. Rove. Perhaps the polarization began earlier; it seems that it has worsened over the past six years plus; not good.

The duck's name was "Wub"; he had beady eyes and a thousand yard stare. He couldn't hold down a steady job, and was constantly mispronouncing his quacks.
And then, the plot thickens..........

I read in this mornings paper, that an analysis of tissue found on a 60 million plus year old TRex, indicated its closest relative was a chicken!
My advice- don't mess with Chicken Man, he might just up and eat your ass for an hor'derve!

I went out onto "the internets" and found the name of the book along with its author (Duck for President by Doreen Cronin), but I'm enjoying your book way too much to spoil the chickening plot. I am still wondering if it was Laura who chose the book she read aloud and why THAT book no matter who chose it??).
Steven, The book you sent came in yesterday's mail. Today looks like an excellent day to curl up with a book. Fate?
Hank, Many bloggers here have introduced threads we've all discussed very politely and with all our differing opinions respected. We have talked often of things political but certainly enjoyed other topics our bloggers introduced such as: Crime & Justice, Bluetooth Headsets, Buying A Car, Mass Transit and others. And we're a new and ever growing group to Wichita Voice. Liberals are quite capable of thinking and keeping abreast of diverse topics.
We also enjoy life and know how to have fun.

Linda- Yes, this definitely is duck weather.
On days like this, I tell the few co-workers that come near me that with weather like this, it's a good day for an axe murder.
That usually leads to a trouble-free day!

I sure wish you would tell some of my customers that! You know it's never going to be a good day when you get a call from the Wichita PD regarding one of your customers...
Yikes!

Duck weather? From the sound of the forecast for later tonight, it's going to be penguin weather. Okay, that's stretching it a bit, but what's with Old Man Winter not giving it up to Spring the way he should?
Speaking of penguins, has anyone see the movie, Happy Feet? It's quite a comment about those who don't fit Society's mold. That and a couple of other things. The music was good, too. :)
