Until there is progress on the political (Iraq political) front in resolving the various issues among the different parties, military action in and of itself just won't do it, IMHO. I believe Gen. Petraeus has acknowledged this before taking command; and, from comments attributed to SecDef Gates in an article I read on cnn.com, he is also acknowledging this as well.

Can I throw a topic diversion in here? I was thinking yesterday how it must have felt to be a parent of a VT student the other day and what a nightmare that must have been not only for the victims. My thoughts obviously went to the families of those killed, but for some reason I had not really given thought until today about how the parents of the shooter must feel. The level of complete and utter devastation they must have felt when they realized that it was their own flesh and blood creating the worst gun massacre in the history of this country. I tend to believe that the inherited guilt they must now carry, in addition to the loss of their son must actually be even harder than that of parents of students killed. I simply cannot imagine.

@lindainks55 - from that article: "At issue is the constitutionality of a federal law banning a rarely performed type of abortion carried out in the middle-to-late second trimester."

I fully realize that this is a touchy subject, but as someone who is certainly seated a little further to the right than the majority of the WV bunch, is the opportunity to do that really an idea that you cherish? I can only assume that you wanted them to overturn this law? I am honestly not meaning to bait you, but as a parent of three children myself, I just cannot imagine that law being something I would be excited about reversing.

Given the disdain of our administration, is it more of a fact that it is just another thing to be mad at the president for? I realize I am not a woman, which in some peoples' opinions reduces my right to even ask this kind of question or have an opinion on the subject, but I just can't get my head around the mentality that embraces snuffing life.

Someone please help me understand this.

Dave, neither can I. I had also been thinking about the family of the shooter after watching something on the idiot box last night concerning their community and the South Korean community in the area within which they live. I cannot imagine what would be harder for a parent to deal with than the premature death of a child; however, the added burden probably does make this harder, if possible, on these folks than that to be borne by the student victims' families.

Let us also not forget the deaths of two faculty members, and the burdens to be borne by their families. Perhaps it might be a bit easier on them than the parents of the students, but still is a burden.

Dave,

I really think it is more a matter of the government telling a woman what she can or cannot do with her body than anything. And before the age old arguement of what about the child, let me throw a few disclaimers out here and then I will put my point to you - I personally do not agree with abortion. It is not a choice I would make for myself. That said, it is ALSO not my place to tell someone what is right or wrong, and what they can or cannot do. Therefore, while personally I would not invoke my right to an abortion, I also do not want to see that right taken away. That said, people commonly forget the toll pregnancy takes on a woman. And I am not talking about cosmetically. Drawing from my own personal experience - if you are going through this pregnancy alone, or with a less than supportive partner, pregnancy is a very emotionally draining experience, and not nearly the joy that it could be. There were days I literally cried myself to sleep wondering if it was fair to my child to bring him into this world with a father who was so uninvolved in his life... One moment that sticks out most in my mind - I was roughly 6 months pregnant at the time, living with my dad while looking for a house to buy, getting ready for work in the morning. The night before I had cried on my father's shoulder about how I was not excited about my baby at all and I didn't think that was fair, to my baby or to myself, because you should get to be excited about your first baby. But I could only dwell on the negative... My dad came up behind me that morning while I was ironing my shirt, hugged me and put his hand on belly and said "don't worry, I'll be exicted about this baby for both of us" I still to this day cry about that. But what about for the women who don't have such wonderfully supportive parents to help them? That is a HUGE toll. Not to mention the potential health risks inherent with pregnancy. I myself nearly died while giving birth to my son from a condition called preeclampsia. My blood pressure was so high when they admitted me to the hospital, the nurse took it three times because she didn't believe the numbers were possible... and then couldn't believe I was still concious because most people have had a stroke by the time they reach the level I was at. This is a condition caused SOLELY by pregnancy - and the only cure for it is to end the pregnancy, by delivery or other options. I got lucky, my son, although delivered a month early and very tiny (barely 5 lbs) was perfectly healthy. Many women are not so lucky... Just a few examples for you of situations I think may be driving factors behind abortion, and why I think that right is best left up to the woman dealing with the pregnancy...

Dave, No abortion is an idea I cherish. I would much prefer no abortion ever happen. I wish each child could be born into a family capable of nurturing them to adulthood. I wish no teenager who experiments with sex got pregnant. You know how long the list could get if we all listed our wishes for the way our world could be.

The law lacks a health exception. So now a pregnant female's life is less protected than the unborn.

I won't be able to help you understand.

You won't be able to help me understand why anyone thinks this is something that should be their business. Will someone else be held accountable for a woman's personal decision? And if carrying this child kills her that's OK too, as long as the unborn's rights are protected?

We've weighed the pros and cons. We've made our decision on this issue. We're both intelligent, thinking adults. We won't change the mind of the other or further any understanding. I know this is something we've given lots of thought to and we didn't come up with our personal beliefs lightly.

Abortions will happen. I don't feel I have the right to make this decision for another woman. I haven't walked a mile in her moccasins. She will be held accountable. No one else will bear her punishment.

How about we all put our efforts to reducing the reasons a woman is faced with this difficult decision? And while we're at it, could we help the many children who are already born and need our help?

I'm not so naive as to ignore that there are those who are morally bankrupt who have multiple abortions.
Oh that we could rid the world of the people who may kill at a university, use abortion as a method of birth control, start wars that kill innocents, drive under the influence... This list could get long too.

I wish the Democrats would stay firm. At least to the extent they force Bush to define what success in Iraq is. He has never answered that question. I still don't know why we're there but since we are I would like to know what we need to achieve in order to claim victory or success or something that indicates the lives lost brought ____________. The lives and resources were worth spending because _______________.

I don't have much confidence the Democrats will stay strong. After all, they want to be reelected more than anything else. I really don't think politicians are capable of determining the direction of our country. Not unless WE THE PEOPLE hold their feet to the fire.

The White House yesterday hinted that it may try to assert executive privilege in denying Congressional investigators access to e-mails sent and received by White House aides on their Republican National Committee e-mail accounts.

It would be an unconventional exercise of a privilege that is controversial even in its traditional application: to protect the White House itself from subpoenas. And it would be another twist in an already peculiarly convoluted story.

I agree! 100%. This is exactly what I think needs to occur. Reducing the reasons abortions are sought is truly an act of one who supports the pro-life "cause." Just getting rid of abortion won't solve the reasons people seek them. I wish I knew how to solve these issues, and honestly I don't. I just wish there were more organizations who realized that there is more to children than just birth.

Linda, the possibility of invoking the privilege is to delay, IMHO; while I think, based upon my understanding of the reach of EP, the same would not apply, this creates a "case or controversy" so that resolution of the issue by the courts could be used to delay the investigation.

As interesting is the consideration of a grant of "limited-use" immunity to Ms Goodling. This creates a dilemma for her and counsel; probably has the Office of White House Counsel doing research to determine how it may intervene in any court proceeding, if at all. Wondering out loud if Ms Goodling is seriously considering same.

James Rowley writes for Bloomberg: "Limited immunity would have to be granted by a federal judge.

"A grant of immunity does not protect a witness from being prosecuted for lying to Congress. A refusal to testify under a grant of immunity would subject a witness to prosecution for criminal contempt of Congress, which carries a maximum one-year prison sentence.

"'There is much skepticism as to whether she even meets the rather low standard' for a 'valid Fifth Amendment claim as opposed to simply invoking the Fifth as a way of getting out of testifying,' said Charles Tiefer, a former deputy House of Representatives counsel who teaches law at the University of Baltimore.

"'This isn't the situation where the person' subpoenaed 'is the well-known target of an investigation,' such as Oliver North in the Iran-Contra scandal, Tiefer said."

Dave, I agree. While reading up on the VaTech news, the one thing I thought was that the shooter obviously wanted attention. Considering his comments and the stalking of the two girls in the past, he wanted somebody or ANYBODY to pay attention to him, and his actions definitely did that. I'm sure he knew they would and were the main reason.

How sad that we give a murderer, whether now dead or alive, what he wanted.

Gster, from what I am able to discern from the media reports, reviewing the orders in the case cited by all, and pondering this in an attempt to synthesize, I've come to the conclusion that no one "screwed up" given the current status of laws, etc. Rather, I'm of the opinion that the whole system is "screwed up".

It seems that: in the two "stalking" complaints, one refused to press charges; the other was being "bothered" (what was going on there, the IMing, isn't to my mind stalking). In the court case, and what little I've been able to glean from it concerning Virginia law, once the court determined he was "mentally ill" but not an imminent threat to himself or others, the court lacked to power to proceed further to an involuntary commitment proceeding, but ordered out-patient counseling; there was, however, no mechanism in place for follow-up. The University apparently was not informed of the decision of the Court; I don't know if it should have been, frankly; this was a civil adjudication of an adult without the University system.

It appears that the VPI police did speak with the individual on at least two occasions; once, concerning the IMing incident; the other, after they were alerted by the roommates of the suicide "threat" which appears to have occasioned the temporary confinement for evaluation under the authority of the court. Professor Roy appears to have gone "above and beyond" in attempting to convince Cho he needed to seek counseling, and attempting to obtain it for him involuntarily from the authorities. While his writings for classes were disturbing, there was no explicit threat against any individual(s) therein, which prevented the police department on campus from taking any formal action thereon.

This is why I began a discussion yesterday on another thread concerning how this type of situation might be handled in the future by colleges and universities; it seemed to me then, and seems more apparent now, that the "system", whatever that is, needs to be examined top to bottom, and its deficiencies addressed, should any be identified.

Obviously, I've not the answer, if indeed one exists; just an opinion concerning the entire "mental health" system itself.

In my opinion, the sad fact is that we can choose to have a either a free society or a safe society. They tend to be somewhat mutually exclusive. Did the kid have a history of problems? Without a doubt. Had he done anything illegal? Possibly. Would it have been OK to lock him up because he was a potential threat? As someone with strong libertarian leanings, I have to say... no way.

Because really, the problem with the whole situation is WHO gets to decide where that line is? Because I struggled with post-partum depression stemming not only from the birth of my son, but my situation at the time of that birth, and once I finished nursing decided to take anti-depressants to regulate that, should I have been locked up? Who gets to decide what requires "locking" up? Because if it is the current government, then we would really be screwed - talk about a dictatorship! Never mind the fact that I am no longer on anti depressants (although some days my fiance says he wishes i would get back on them because they really controlled those "monthly mood swings" !) and am now perfectly fine, if i had been locked up then, what would i have to do to get out, and what if someone was capable of faking those criteria? The list goes on and on in my mind of why this is a BAD idea!!!!

H.I.P.A.A. -- Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act may have played a part in this. I say MAY. This wonderfully screwed up piece of legislation became law in 1996. Like so much the U.S. Congress does it started out as a way the person leaving one job for another wouldn't face losing health insurance benefits. Then our lawmakers in Washington D.C. (or probably lobbyists since they write much of the legislation today) got their fingers in it and, Katy bar the door!

My husband and I expect to be the person who cares for the other should that become necessary. And you should see the hoops we must jump through now just to get our medical information shared with the other. We have to file a special "permission" ANNUALLY with the health insurance company, the prescription drug provider (two, becasue one is a mail-order benefit), each doctor, hospital... That's just to protect them from telling me or him medical information about the other. If I'm unconscious and it's important Wayne know information to help in my care... And we're married 27 years!

Since this man was 23 years old no health care provider would have been legally able to share medical info with parents, etc. for several years (five).

Discovery Calls Police on Student Protesters at SMU
A group of SMU students conducted a silent protest at the Discovery Institute's Darwin vs. Design conference last week. They put together a flier made up of quotes from the Wedge Document, made posters, and went to the conference.

Now here's the best part: Remember all the crying from Discovery about censorship when faculty members protested having the conference on campus, and all the chest thumping about how "Darwinists" were afraid to debate the ID geniuses?

Here's what happened when the students showed up with their posters and fliers for the silent protest:

We began handing out fliers and were receiving mixed reviews - until a tall, lanky, and toothy man jittered his way over to us and demanded to know who was handing out these fliers. We all took responsibility, and he began ripping the flyers out of our hands, saying that we could not distribute anything of the sort. I told him we paid to go to school here and that we were students who could walk anywhere on our campus, and that it just so happened that we walked into McFarlin, and it also just so happened that we had fliers to distribute.

He didn't take too kindly to that, and in two minutes' time, we had two police officers who all of a sudden had a real job to do watching us instead of sleeping the night away in the back. I'm sure if we had been distributing thank-you notes expressing our gratitude for the institute coming to our campus, he would've given us a warmer reception

The students, who call the Discovery event more of an "indoctrination seminar" than a conference, report that Lee Strobel, the first speaker said "he believed the world's creator and designer was the 'God of the Bible.'"

"That's interesting," say the students, "seeing as how he said nothing of the God of the Jews, Muslims and other religions; apparently Christianity's God is the only one we have to believe in. And his entire speech dealt with differentiating atheists from Christians, where he seemed to use the word atheist as a synonym for 'Darwinist' or 'evolutionist.'"

I do not personally know Pat Hayes, but I have always found good stuff there. If you are into the KS BoE antics, and school issues in general, it is a must read.
If you notice something else on Pat's blog....
NO ADVERTISEMENTS.
Pat keeps up this blog just because it is the right thing to do.

And another damn thing.
The right thing to do would be to fire Gonzo's ass,
impeach shrub and rover, and clean house completely.
This crew makes the Clintons look like sunday school teachers, and that ain't easy to do!
Look at all the terribly dishonest shit that the ol' shrubster has done. sheesh.
And what was the woman lawyer that he wanted on the SCOTUS? Harriet?
Yeah what a dear sweet old friend of shrub's.
A perfectly sweet little ol' lady, right?
For christ's sake, the ol' bag turned out to be just what we thought....A LOYAL SHRUBBIE.
This whole admin has been the worst thing for this country since our own civil war.

And when we are done cleaning house, keep tabs on each and every replacement.
Also give the attorneys their jobs back.

BTW, anyone remember when the idiot-in-chief said sumpin' about being the great uniter?
yeah, and him and his buddies wanna sell us a bridge to nowhere too.
Shrub~here's your sign, it simply says....
DEE-DEE-DEE!!

Listing of elementary through high schools, colleges and universities receiving threats since Monday's occurrence at VPI. I am also told by an acquaintance that threats were received today in Douglas County schools, including Lawrence High School, although not mentioned in the linked piece.

Learned by reading the link I posted above: interestingly, most of the threats reported occurred prior to the broadcast last night of a part of the materials Cho mailed NBC. Interested to know how many occurred today after the broadcast. My point: from the listing, doesn't seem to me that any "copy cat" wannabes needed to see the broadcast before making the threats.

What I'm also wondering is what, besides job performance, people job performance should be judged by? Surely not politics!

Gonzo did some fancy dancing while trying to explain about Carol Lam, who had received glowing job performance reports and had never been told she wasn't doing her job to the best and beyond her ability. Yet he continued to toe the tried and untrue that she wasn't performing her job well.

It was interesting to listen to the Republicans go after him. Even one (can't remember, but it'll come to me) started out on a positive note, but lambasted him before the questioning was over.

Well worth the listen, yet when my 2 oldest came to pick up their kids, what did they talk about? American Idol. I nailed them on that, and we changed to more important topics. Much more.

I think I'll wander to "other" blogs to see how Gonzo is faring there. :)

Landscape

Level upon level of wash and stone
Cab drivers yelling that each one, each one's alone
A forced-up smile when casting your eyes
Insanity reigns on streets of no size
High crumbling walls of stones that have seen
The rigors of war and have never been cleaned
A modern pay turnpike in midst of it all
While an old woman works in a garden with trowel
Trees are just blooming, I've come just in time
Purple spring flowers in rebirth pantomime
A miniature red castle in black craggy pass
Jig-saw puzzle houses the resultants of mass
The top of a mountain cut off by the mist
And a white serene temple in space does exist
The lemon trees, oranges, and cactus alike
The growth of a vineyard with grapes not yet ripe
A truck is forced off as big as a house
While dawdling along like a little green mouse
A long sweeping view expounds my belief
And clear restless water with an absence of reef
Evolutions and cycles we come face to face
While foliage drifts in green filmy lace
Now rough and then coarse soon velvet to touch
Octagonal mosaic on a church that is such
And columns of clouds go boiling across
The mountains that stop them and suffer no loss
Head reeling cliffs that fall down to sea
While people are sleeping they hang peacefully
But the trucks rolling blindly are waking them up
To talk quietly murmuring over the morning's first cup
Arches and steps are seen everywhere
Manmade and Godmade and one made of air
The essence of time is virtually gone
Day goes and night comes, I breathe up my lawn
Buona sera, buona sera is a faithful reply
From any stranger you pass who catches your eye
And pinpoints of brilliance, some moving, some still
Are caught in the glass of my window sill
The pinpoints I mentioned I don't speak of stars
But then, think again, it's funny they are
Stars made by man who himself is a star
If only he'd realize the powers that are
And all he's got to do is lay down and play dead
And now looky here Vesuvius looms overhead
