O'Bama of Ireland

Wichita

"Obama was born in Hawaii to a black man from Kenya and a white woman — with Irish links — from Kansas."

 From: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,269836,00.html

I guess I didn't realize Obama could trace his roots back to Kansas. That's pretty interesting, I suppose...not that he's ever LIVED here, but still it's good "Cliff Claven" trivia :)

Dubya, you must have missed the breathless tone of the story in the Eagle a while back exploring the Kansas roots of Senator Obama. :-)

cnn.com "breaking news" reports that Sen. Obama has been placed under Secret Service protection due to threats.

Will be interested to follow this.

I just heard that Homeland Security has provided secret service protection for Obama due to a threat. I didn't hear more details than this.

My grandson, Andrew, will spend six weeks this summer teaching Web and Graphic Design at the Punahou School in Honolulu, HI. According to wiki with regard to Barack Obama: "...He then returned to Honolulu to live with his maternal grandparents while attending Punahou School from 5th grade until his graduation in 1979."

This has no more to do with anything than the fact that he had "ties" to Kansas but I found it interesting.

Linda, I hope your grandson's stay in Honolulu is rewarding, both fiscally and physically. Those summer positions that are more than "coming home to work at (insert name of retail employer here)" have been, for both offspring, rewarding in many ways.

Not knowing, of course, if he will receive taxable compensation for his services, but if he does, some more "free advice": he may need to file a nonresident Hawaii income tax return on the same, if only to receive a refund on any state of HI income taxes withheld. :-)

He will be compensated. I think he would have paid them (but don't tell them that as he is playing it pretty cool!) ;-) I appreciate your advice and will pass it along.

He will be home here in Wichita in just a couple of weeks for a short time before going on to Hawaii, then back in Wichita for another short time before returning to Walla Walla for next semester. Such a lot of excitement for a young man! He "took" to being off on his own and I doubt we see more than the visits in the future. He still calls, emails, even sends the occasional snail mail (thanks for the little goodies Grandma thinks he needs to receive).

Linda, just wait until he's a junior; "what grandson" you may ask, based upon our experience with long-distance offspring in college. Then, again based upon the experience with the elder, during the Senior year, the only "snail" mail or almost any other contact will be limited to the graduation announcement. This is as it should be. When the elder was a Senior, btw, she took advantage of the Carleton trimester system with a very long break (Thanksgiving through New Year's) to work on campus, home for three days at Christmas. Again, as it should be, in the opinion of the parents.

Latest on the Senator Obama matter; appears no specific credible threat, but "hate mail", etc., being received by the campaign.

Hey, I am going to be off the afternoon of the meet-up. I will be there and I don't care who is or is not C & C. Hoping to meet my inspiration, WSClark.

There has been an administrative job come up where I work. So, I might start being on the other side at some point in the near future. Sorry. I hope my friends forgive me.

I'm not going to be able to come ot the meet up. We'll be in Emporia at the dog show. Joyce is showing a little Beardie puppy for a friend. We're coming home Saturday evening for the symphony and then going back to Emporia for the dog show again on Sunday.

Interesting thing. The boy and I went to the CCH class last Sunday and got our certification. I learned that the way I've been carrying my gun in the pickup all these years is actually legal. I did pick up some poiters on how to make it more convenient but I've actually been legal.

However, in my motor home I've been a little sideways with the laws of most states that I've passed through. However, I'm in the process of getting that fixed for the trip to the east coast this fall.

All in all a pretty good class. I would recommend it for people even if they didn't want to carry concealled. A real eye opener!

Sorry that I'm going to miss Julie and all the others. You guys have fun!

Hank

Steven, What in the world does "being on the other side" mean? Does it mean you'll BE Darth Vader? Does it mean you're going to stop thinking, find a boyfriend, support this war of choice? Does it mean you're going to become a neocon? Or, is it just that weekend nights might be free from work? ;-)
