Bowling for Wichita...

Wichita

There has to be something else behind the sudden cancellation to the bowling tournament, right? Has to be...SURELY staffers at the city didn't just let a $100 million package "fall through the cracks" as the City Councils seems to want us to believe. How could anyone just let trivial matters get in the way of such a huge deal for the Wichita economy?

The City Council seems to be of the opinion that the city staff dropped the ball and looked like nothing short of a deer in headlights when this situation was "brought to their attention". Where was the oversight committee? Why were there no COUNCILMEMBERS in charge of seeing to these negotations? It seems to me that if you have $100 million riding on a yes or no answer, you get some ELECTED OFFICIALS off their butts and into the hot seat to make darn sure we get that YES.

There are people and organizations around town that are trying SO hard to rev up Wichita's economy, to attract attention, to bring new business, industry, and people to Wichita...turn up the excitement...and we have these bumbleheads in office throwing away hundreds of millions of dollars because they were too thickheaded to say "yes we can, Mr. Bowling President Guy" and then make it happen.

Good Job, Wichita City Council. Good Job, Mayor Brewer, welcome to the inferno.

Dubya, while I'm a bit skeptical about the $100 million figure bandied about, indeed someone dropped the ball here. Under the City Manager/Council form of government, it is most appropriate to point at the staff, as they are the ones with the day to day operational responsibility.

I've been following this in an intermittent way in the media, and believe this to be true, among all the allegations: under Kansas law, it is impossible for a government to guarantee future expenditures ("cash basis" budget). If this was a deal killer (maintenance of CII), then the staff was negligent in not trying to work around the problem with the legislature.

I think it would have been nice to find some way to work around the problem. If we were talking about a $100 million figure, it would have been a nice little boost the economy.

It happens, I realize that, that things don't always go our way, but I think I'd have been saying, you know lets us see what we can do, and get back to you next week on what ever needs to be discussed.

I don't understand how this negotiation could get so cross ways that alarm bells wouldn't ring far before the deal crashed. Someone needs firing over this.

I remember the last time the bowling people came to town and it was a big deal , generating a lot of $.

Did the world turn upside down while all of us were sleeping and we're the only sane people left in the entire world? Did the brains fall out of everyone else while the world was inverted!?

From a quick scan of the article posted on kansas.com concerning this, it looks like "finger pointing" time is commencing.

If I were the Mayor I'd be getting in contact wit the heads of the USBC and saying, listen what do we need to do to get you here. We may not be able to meet all of those things, but lets see what I can do. Anyway, KSN seems to think that option is open if the USBC wants to come back to the table.
