Loose Lips Sink Ships

International News

At what point do we hold our media accountable? Perhaps you may have not seen the news report today detailing how President Bush has authorized covert activities against Iran. Maybe you did.

Brian Ross with ABC has presented, via a blog entry, a report discussing how the President has signed an order activating activities in Iran to attempt to destabilize their government, amid other covert acts.

My question...or rather, my comments have nothing to do with whether or not this order should have been given. There are pages and pages of comments to be made on whether or not we should move against Iran. I am personally not in favor of actions against the Iranian people, despite my opinion of their current idiotic government.

Leaking this kind of informaiton is BEYOND sensitive to the men and women involved in these operations. Not only that, it betrays any trust the Iranians have in the US...AND it completely undermines any conversation Condoleeza and the Iranians were going to have next week regarding Iraq.

This is reckless reporting and completely irresponsible, in my opinion. Whether or not you agree with the action, these "loose lips" are going to get the people on the ground killed; it's going to endanger far more people that it will inform.

 Thoughts?

It isn't really clear exactly who leaked the info, nor the "why". It could be a bluff, psychological warfare or just plain "oops". I don't know, but I would presume these types of operations have been ongoing with respect to Iran for a long time.

Gster, I agree with your post. I would add my speculation that it is quite likely the Iranians are already well aware of the "black ops", if their intelligence service is as good as it is proclaimed.

Vaughn- I agree. If these operations are both ongoing and successful, the Iranians are going to notice something is up.

In scanning the post on Brian Ross' blog, I note that the program has been ongoing for a year or more.

I think who ever leaked this needs to be hunted down and hung as a traitor.

That is about all I have to say on that.

Nathan, from reading the link, it looks like you would wipe out some active and retired CIA folks, at least. Revenge is a bitch, isn't it.

You are too young to recall this, I'm sure, but similar accusations were made with reference to the New York Times' publication of the "Pentagon Papers". The Republic survived.

Controlled leaks are a way of life in DC. Someone wanted this disclosure- maybe a way of showing that something is being done regarding Iran.
In any event, it's not earth shattering news.

I would suspect there is a lot of activity on the Internet , hopefully causing problems for our towel-headed friends!

It wouldn't surprise me if this wasn't an "authorized" leak, now that I think about it. A warning shot across the bow to the Iranians, so to speak.

Cheney and Iran is the combination that concerns me.

I hope he doesn't shoot us in the foot this time!

Thanks guys! I wanted to see if I was overreacting. I would imagine I'm probably just irked at the nature of the report...the effect on operations will probably be minimal since, as you've suggested, operations have probably been ongoing for a while now.
