Racism in Wichita

Wichita

Who knew Wichita had such a seedy, disgusting underbelly?

Last night a man of undisclosed race was shot and killed in the 1300 block of Ida, south of Downtown. Unfortunate. While the article was short and to the point, not disclosing the actual events leading up to the incident or even whether or not the situation was gang related, TWO PAGES of comments quickly filled the thread.

Most of these comments were highly charged, highly racist, and totally appauling.

It saddens me to see people react this way. Assumptions and preconceived notions do nothing but perpetuate the very cycle most of these people are talking about "hating".

I am troubled, concerned, and even scared of a white gang member every bit as much as I am of a black gang member. A group of thugs intent on vandalism or mayhem is intimidating no matter what color their skin. Poverty and lack of education create breeding grounds for gangs. It doesn't matter who it is.

I don't experience this kind of hate everyday in my life. Perhaps I've unwittingly been seeing the world through rose-colored glasses. This article ruined my whole day.

Dubya,

An interesting thought about being able to see the underbelly of society is that it is prevalent and entrenched in society though perhaps not seen by everybody. I'd recommend to those interested, riding observation with the police once(Friday/Saturday) since those evenings would provide ease for those who work during the week.

One gets an appreciation for what happens and just how surreal the underbelly is. Depending on the part of town you do the observation in, you get different types of crimes. West side of Wichita seemed mostly traffic and burglary. North/Northeast was gang related and domestic violence. East was more traffic and burglary. South was again gang related.

That is a stereotypical view and just related to my observations. No scientific poll or method of data collection was used. Certainly, one walks away with an appreciation of what law enforcement does though. I'd recommend it to everybody.
